Optics : principles and applications
Optical technology is essential to communications and medical technology. K.K. Sharma has written a comprehensive volume on optics. Beginning with introductory ideas and equations, Sharma takes the reader through the world of optics detailing problems encountered, advanced subjects, and actual applications. Elegantly written, this book rigorously examines optics with over 300 illustrations and several problems in each chapter. The book begins with light propagation in anisotropic media considered much later in most books. Sharma has started with this because it provides a more general and beautiful example of light propagation. Nearly one third of the book deals with applications of optics. This simple idea of merging the sometimes overwhelming and dry subject of optics with real world applications will create better future engineers. It will make ‘optics’ jump off the page for readers and they will see it take shape in the world around them. In presenting optics practically, as well as theoretically, readers will come away not only with a complete knowledge base but a context in which to place it. Space and time in contemporary physics : an introduction to the theory of relativity and gravitation
Moritz Schlick; Rendered Into English By Henry L. Brose; With An Introduction By F.a. Lindemann
An authoritative exposition of the theory of relativity, this volume is the work of the leader of the famed Vienna Circle, Moritz Schlick. It offers an accessible approach to the physical doctrines of the special and general theories of relativity, with particular focus on the theories’ philosophic significance.Beginning with an overview of the importance of the Einsteinian theory to the realm of physics, the author proceeds to explain the special principle of relativity, the geometrical relativity of space, the mathematical formulation of spatial relativity, the inseparability of geometry and physics in experience, and the relativity of motion and its connection with inertia and gravitation. Additional topics include the general postulate of relativity and the measure-determinations of the space-time continuum, enunciation and significance of the fundamental law of the new theory, the finiteness of the universe, and the relation of the relativity theory of philosophy. Both as a clear, nonmathematical introduction to a complex subject and a definition of the theories’ philosophical ramifications, this book is outstanding. It will benefit teachers and students of philosophy and physics, along with anyone else who wants a better understanding of the ideas behind Einsteinian physics.

The Physics Problem Solver (Problem Solvers Solution Guides)
Joseph Molitoris, The Staff Of Research And Education Assn
I cannot say enough good things about this book! The size was intimidating at first, but don't be afraid! This book loves you and wants to help you. For me, there is no better way to learn physics than by going over problem after problem. This book helps in a way a textbook only touches on: by showing you HOW to solve the problems. The questions at the end of the textbook chapter don't do that. And they also work a bit like a textbook in that some of the problems teach you key facts about a subject. This is great because rather than telling you these facts, like in a textbook, they show you. The problems really become addicting. They make you feel so empowered and you really can tell you are learning. It actually makes you say, "oh, I'll do just one more!" And I don't even really like physics.

Thinking Physics: Practical Lessons in Critical Thinking
Lewis Carroll Epstein explains deep ideas in physics in an easy-to-understand way. __Thinking Physics__ is a perfect beginnerâs guide to an amazingly wide range of physics-related questions. The book targets topics that science teachers and students spend time wondering about, like wing lift. Epstein elucidates the familiar but misunderstood such as how tides work along with more obscure but fascinating phenomena like the Bernoulli subâ and the artificial auroraâ created by hydrogen bombs. Broken into many short sections and peppered with Epsteinâs own playful hand-drawn illustrations, the book does not simply give the right answer: It also goes into the answers that seem right but are wrong and shows why they are wrong a rarity in science books. __Thinking Physics__ is a rigorously correct, lighthearted, and cleverly designed Q and A book for physicists of all ages.
Physics for Engineers and Scientists 3rd Edition Vol. 3 3
Hans C. Ohanian, John T. Markert
Publication Date: May 9, 2007 | ISBN-10: 0393929698 | ISBN-13: 978-0393929690 | Edition: Third Edition Designed for the introductory calculus-based physics course, Physics for Engineers and Scientists is distinguished by its lucid exposition and accessible coverage of fundamental physical concepts. Using real-world examples, the authors offer a glimpse of the practical applications of physics in science and engineering, developing a solid conceptual foundation before introducing mathematical results and derivations (a basic knowledge of derivatives and integrals is assumed).
The Physics of Everyday Things : The Extraordinary Science Behind an Ordinary Day
**Physics professor, bestselling author, and dynamic storyteller James Kakalios reveals the mind-bending science behind the seemingly basic things that keep our daily lives running, from our smart phones and digital “clouds” to x-ray machines and hybrid vehicles.** Most of us are clueless when it comes to the physics that makes our modern world so convenient. What’s the simple science behind motion sensors, touch screens, and toasters? How do we glide through tolls using an E-Z Pass, or find our way to new places using GPS? In __The Physics of Everyday Things__, James Kakalios takes us on an amazing journey into the subatomic marvels that underlie so much of what we use and take for granted. Breaking down the world of things into a single day, Kakalios engages our curiosity about how our refrigerators keep food cool, how a plane manages to remain airborne, and how our wrist fitness monitors keep track of our steps. Each explanation is coupled with a story revealing the interplay of the astonishing invisible forces that surround us. Through this “narrative physics,” __The Physics of Everyday Things__ demonstrates that—far from the abstractions conjured by terms like the Higgs Boson, black holes, and gravity waves—sophisticated science is also quite practical. With his signature clarity and inventiveness, Kakalios ignites our imaginations and enthralls us with the principles that make up our lives.
