Anti-Liberalism 2000: The Rise of New Millennium Collectivism (Occasional Paper, 115)
David Henderson, G. C. Harcourt, Geoffrey Owen
In the last twenty-five years, many countries have embarked on programmes of economic liberalisation. But, David Henderson argues, it is a mistake to believe that economic liberalism has triumphed: anti-liberal forces are strong and in some respects have gained ground. Henderson analyses these forces, new and old. In addition to the continuing hold of 'pre-economic ideas', new elements include anti-market NGOs, a wider circle of perceived 'victims of injustice', the spread of labour market regulation, and an 'alarmist consencus' about globalisation and environmental degradation. The combination of old and new ideas results in 'new millennium collectivism', which provides the main impetus behind the anti-liberalism of today. Geoffrey Harcourt, in a commentary, agrees with some of Henderson's views, but disagrees particularly on the need for minimum standards in labour markets. He contends also that Henderson is too hard on NGOs and too impressed with the long-term competitive equilibrium model. David Henderson responds to the comments and sets out further issues that need to be explored.
Consumption in the Age of Affluence : The World of Food
Ben Fine, Michael Heasman, And Judith Wright
With growing affluence in the developed world, food has become an increasing focus for attention. Here, the authors argue that in order to understand the extensive and dramatic developments in the world of food, a new interdisciplinary approach is necessary. The Age of Affluence successfully addresses food consumption in this way. The volume: * argues the importance of socioeconomic and cultural factors over diet, in influencing the production, marketing and consumption of different groups of foods; * places food systems theory on sound analytical foundations; * draws critically upon food systems literature; * includes case studies from the sugar, dairy and meat systems; * employs novel statistical techniques to identify and explain distinct patterns of food consumption; The book will help to revitalize the discipline of food studies and points the way forward for the continuing study of food consumption. As such, it will be invaluable to students, researchers and policymakers engaged in the world of food.
Japan: The Childless Society? : The Crisis of Motherhood
Muriel Jolivet; Translated By Anne-Marie Glasheen
Disillusioned by long hours at home alone and by demands from the older generation, Japanese women are marrying later, resulting in a sharp decline in the Japanese birth rate. Japan: The Childless Society considers the reasons why Japanese women are finding it increasingly difficult to accept the terms and conditions of motherhood. It explores the major factors contributing to maternal malaise in Japan including: the Ten Commandments of the Good Mother, the changing role of the father, education and careers and nostalgia from older generations. Drawing on extensive interviews with Japanese women and translated into English for the first time, this innovative study examines the implications behind the declining birth rate and looks towards the future of a country that is in danger of becoming a ''childless society''.

Memory : organization and locus of change
Larry R. Squire, Norman M. Weinberger, Gary Lynch, James L. Mcgaugh
This book brings together an internationally respected group of researchers for the purpose of examining neuroplasticity, a topic of immense current interest in psychology, neuroscience, neuropsychology, and clinical neurology. The chapters represent state-of-the-art work on neuroplasticity at all levels: behavioral, neural, and molecular. They describe recent work on memory ranging from cellular morphological studies in invertebrates to research on the human brain made possible by new advances in neuroimaging technology. The book begins with an introductory chapter that considers the psychology of memory at the global, structural level. The remainder of the volume is divided into three related parts. The first focuses on recent approaches, which are based in part on new technology, that aim to measure and describe activity in relatively large populations of neurons. The second focuses on memory at the level of brain systems. One major theme to emerge from work at this level is that memory is composed of multiple, separable components that can be identified with specific anatomical structures and connections. The third part of the book focuses on molecular and cellular studies that show how individual neurons and their synapses behave in a history-dependent manner. This research concerns both brief changes in synaptic plasticity as well as more lasting changes in connectivity, which depend on altered gene expression and morphological growth and change. Altogether, the...
The Social Psychology Of The Classroom (routledge Research In Education)
Teachers often find that their training has not provided them with sufficient knowledge and understanding about underlying social forces and processes in their classrooms. This new book addresses this gap by focusing on the social psychology of the classroom, providing the relevant social psychological knowledge and facilitating the application of that knowledge in the practice of the teacher in the classroom. Elisha Babad discusses ''the state of the art'' of classroom management theory, research and practice and explores a full range of teacher and classroom experiences (such as teachers' differential behavior in the classroom and its psychological price, students' roles and relationships, and distinguishing between ''educating'' students and ''changing'' students). This exceptional book will be of interest to students and scholars of educational studies and educational psychology as well as for teachers-in-training, experienced teachers, and ''educators-at-large.''

Colonial Land Policies in Palestine 1917-1936 (Oxford Historical Monographs)
In this book, Martin Bunton focuses on the way in which the Palestine Mandate was part of a broader British imperial administration - a fact often masked by Jewish immigration and land purchase in Palestine. His meticulous research reveals clear links to colonial practice in India, Sudan, and Cyprus amongst other places. He argues that land officials' views on sound land management were derived from their own experiences of rural England, and that this was far more influential on the shaping of land policies than the promise of a Jewish National Home. Bunton reveals how the British were intent on preserving the status quo of Ottoman land law, which (when few Britons could read Ottoman or were well grounded in its legal codes) led to a series of translations, interpretations, and hence new applications of land law. The sense of importance the British attributed to their work surveying and registering properties and transactions, is captured in the efforts of British officials to microfilm all of their records at the height of the Second World War. Despite this however, land policies remained in flux.
Nursing Perspectives On Quality Of Life (routledge Essentials For Nurses)
One of the fundamental aims of nursing is to safeguard or promote patients' 'quality of life'. In __Nursing Perspectives on Quality of Life__, Peter Draper examines existing ways of defining the concept and argues that nurses need to adopt a fresh approach, which more accurately reflects patients' concerns and helps them to develop practical ways of promoting the well-being of people in their care. The text provides an analysis of statistical approaches to quality of life, including social indicators, the Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY), and the medical outcomes literature. The author proposes an alternative, qualitative approach to organising care, which respects the patients' choice and individuality and presents the findings of new research into the quality of life of older people in hospital wards. Combining original research and a critical analysis of existing models, __Nursing Perspectives on Quality of Life__ is suitable for students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

From Beacon Hill to the Crystal Palace : The 1851 Travel Diary of a Working-Class Woman
Lorenza Stevens Berbineau; Karen L Kilcup; Cairns Collection Of American Women Writers
Because prior studies of American women’s travel writing have focused exclusively on middle-class and wealthy travelers, it has been difficult to assess the genre and its participants in a holistic fashion. One of the very few surviving working-class travel diaries, Lorenza Stevens Berbineau’s account provides readers with a unique perspective of a domestic servant in the wealthy Lowell family in Boston. Staying in luxurious hotels and caring for her young charge Eddie during her six-month grand tour, Berbineau wrote detailed and insightful entries about the people and places she saw. Contributing to the traditions of women’s, diary, and travel literature from the perspective of a domestic servant, Berbineau's narrative reveals an arresting and intimate outlook on both her own life and the activities, places, and people she encounters. For example, she carefully records Europeans’ religious practices, working people and their behavior, and each region’s aesthetic qualities. Clearly writing in haste and with a pleasing freedom from the constraints of orthographic and stylistic convention, Berbineau offers a distinctive voice and a discerning perspective. Alert to nuances of social class, her narrative is as appealing and informative to today's readers as it no doubt was to her fellow domestics in the Lowell household. Unobtrusively edited to retain as much as possible the individuality and texture of the author’s original manuscript, From Beacon Hill to the Crystal Palace...
