Advanced research methods in the built environment

Andrew Knight; Leslie Ruddock

This book provides a bridge between the introductory research methods books and the discipline-specific, higher level texts. Its unique feature is the coverage of the detailed process of research rather than the findings of research projects. Chapter authors have been carefully selected by their expertise, discipline and location to give an eclectic range of perspectives. Particular care has been taken to balance positivist with interpretivist approaches throughout. The authors focus is on the practical consequences of research philosophies, strategies and techniques by using their own research and by evaluating the work of others. Advanced Research Methods in the Built Environment addresses common topics raised by postgraduate level researchers rather than dealing with all aspects of the research process. Issues covered range from the practicalities of producing a journal article to the role of theory in research. The material brought together here provides a valuable resource for the training and development of doctoral and young researchers and will contribute to a new sense of shared methodological understanding across built environment research.

The Ambivalent Art of Katherine Anne Porter

Mary Titus; Mary Titus

During a life that spanned ninety years, Katherine Anne Porter (1890-1980) witnessed dramatic and intensely debated changes in the gender roles of American women. Mary Titus draws upon unpublished Porter papers, as well as newly available editions of her early fiction, poetry, and reviews, to trace Porter’s shifting and complex response to those cultural changes. Titus shows how Porter explored her own ambivalence about gender and creativity, for she experienced firsthand a remarkable range of ideas concerning female sexuality. These included the Victorian attitudes of the grandmother who raised her; the sexual license of revolutionary Mexico, 1920s New York, and 1930s Paris; and the conservative, ordered attitudes of the Agrarians. Throughout Porter’s long career, writes Titus, she “repeatedly probed cultural arguments about female creativity, a woman’s maternal legacy, romantic love, and sexual identity, always with startling acuity, and often with painful ambivalence.” Much of her writing, then, serves as a medium for what Titus terms Porter’s “gender-thinking”--her sustained examination of the interrelated issues of art, gender, and identity. Porter, says Titus, rebelled against her upbringing yet never relinquished the belief that her work as an artist was somehow unnatural, a turn away from the essential identity of woman as “the repository of life,” as childbearer. In her life Porter increasingly played a highly feminized public role as southern lady, but in her...

The Life of Hinduism (The Life of Religion) (Volume 3)

Edited By John Stratton Hawley And Vasudha Narayanan

The Life of Hinduism brings together a series of essays--many recognized as classics in the field--that present Hinduism as a vibrant, truly ''lived'' religion. Celebrating the diversity for which Hinduism is known, this volume begins its journey in the ''new India'' of Bangalore, India's Silicon Valley, where global connections and local traditions rub shoulders daily. Readers are then offered a glimpse into the multifaceted world of Hindu worship, life-cycle rites, festivals, performances, gurus, and castes. The book's final sections deal with the Hinduism that is emerging in diasporic North America and with issues of identity that face Hindus in India and around the world: militancy versus tolerance and the struggle between owning one's own religion and sharing it with others. Contributors: Andrew Abbott, Michael Burawoy, Patricia Hill Collins, Barbara Ehrenreich, Evelyn Nakano Glenn, Sharon Hays, Douglas Massey, Joya Misra, Orlando Patterson, Frances Fox Piven, Lynn Smith-Lovin, Judith Stacey, Arthur Stinchcombe, Alain Touraine, Immanuel Wallerstein, William Julius Wilson, Robert Zussman

Exclusionary Empire : English Liberty Overseas, 1600–1900

Edited By Jack P. Greene

Consisting of an introduction and ten chapters, Exclusionary Empire examines the transfer of English traditions of liberty and the rule of law overseas from 1600 to 1900. Each chapter is written by a noted specialist and focuses on a particular area of the settler empire - Colonial North America, the West Indies, Ireland, the early United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa - and on one non-settler colony, India. The book examines the ways in which the polities in each of these areas incorporated these traditions, paying particular attention to the extent to which these traditions were confined to the independent white male segments of society and denied to most others. This collection will be invaluable to all those interested in the history of colonialism, European expansion, the development of empire, the role of cultural inheritance in those histories, and the confinement of access to that inheritance to people of European descent.

Survivors' Songs : From Maldon to the Somme

Jon Stallworthy

World War I was a very literary war, and Jon Stallworthy, an astute reader of war literature generally, is a specialist in the British poetry of that conflict. A poet himself as well as a student of literature, he has published an anthology of war poetry, produced a biography of Wilfred Owen, and is the foremost modern editor of Owen's poetry. Now he has added to that body of critical work. He has published a collection of his essays, revised and assembled for this volume, that appeared earlier as journal articles. Survivors' Songs: From Maldon to the Somme, his latest study, is a well-written and insightful discussion of that genre of literature known as "war poetry." His essays begin with the Old English poem "The Battle of Malden" and move beyond the poetry that followed the Battle of the Somme. Nevertheless, British poetry of World War I forms the centerpiece of this volume, and Stallworthy is an expert on and a subtle reader of it. That I find his essays on Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and David Jones the most telling is due both to the strength of those essays and also to my own admiration of those poets. What's missing, it seems to me, is fuller treatment of the poetry of Isaac Rosenberg and Ivor Gurney, both fine poets and both deserving of fuller discussion. But one can't have everything. He does mention Charles Sorley, one of the early clear-eyed poets of World War I and places him correctly in context. Killed in 1915 at the Battle of...

Shakespeare and cognition: Aristotle's legacy and Shakespearean drama: webbing the invisible

Arthur F. Kinney

Shakespeare and Cognition examines the essential relationship between vision, knowledge, and memory in Renaissance models of cognition as seen in Shakespeare's plays. Drawing on both Aristotle's Metaphysics and contemporary cognitive literary theory, Arthur F. Kinney explores five key objects/images in Shakespeare's plays – crowns, bells, rings, graves and ghosts – that are not actually seen (or, in the case of the latter, not meant to be seen), but are central to the imagination of both the playwright and the playgoers.NOTE: Shakespeare Studies should be a distinct category, or Early Modern English Literary Studies. I am constantly flummoxed by the sometimes oddly conflated and generally limited choice of categories. The category structure here obviously grew incrementally with the platform, but it's now, if you'll pardon my saying so, a quixotic a Winchester Mystery House. It needs to be completely revamped and updated -- and hopefully before millions more books are added to the library. I'm not criticizing; folks have done a magnificent job getting here. But "categories" needs work. And protocols for handling compound categories, for example, when a work is not just one thing, but several - e.g., literature, philosophy, religion, cultural history, etc. As a research scholar, retired professor, and former librarian, I believe I could contribute to this imagined project. Likely it is that you all already have such an improvement in the works. Best - John

China's Use of Military Force: Beyond the Great Wall and the Long March (Cambridge Modern China Series)

Andrew Scobell, William C. Kirby

In this 2003 study of China's militarism, Andrew Scobell examines the use of military force abroad - as in Korea (1950), Vietnam (1979), and the Taiwan Strait (1995–6) - and domestically, as during the Cultural Revolution of the late 1960s and in the 1989 military crackdown in Tiananmen Square. Debunking the view that China has become increasingly belligerent in recent years because of the growing influence of soldiers, Scobell concludes that China's strategic culture has remained unchanged for decades. Nevertheless, the author uncovers the existence of a 'Cult of Defense' in Chinese strategic culture. The author warns that this 'Cult of Defense' disposes Chinese leaders to rationalize all military deployment as defensive, while changes in the People's Liberation Army's doctrine and capabilities over the past two decades suggest that China's twenty-first century leaders may use military force more readily than their predecessors.

Into the Hands of the Living God (The Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies)

Lyle M. Eslinger

Annotation Into the Hands of the Living God is Lyle Eslinger's second study of Deuteronomistic literature. This book is devoted to studies of key texts (Joshua 1-9; Judges 1-2; 1 Samuel 12; 1 Kings 8; 2 Kings 17) or concepts (the success/failure of the conquest; the exile and theodicy) in these narratives. Eslinger's readings are unorthodox and challenging, both for readers from the communities of faith and for critical scholarship. The Deuteronomistic narratives are here shown to be far from being a vindication of the ways of God at Israel's expense. Rather, in these narratives God, no less than Israel's leaders, has his hands soiled in the machinations that end in Babylon. What the Deuteronomistic history offers is, rather, dispassionate analysis of the problems, some unavoidable, that predetermined the failure of the covenant relationship. The collection of carefully worked out close readings of the biblical text in this volume provides a new critical vantage point from which one can reassess conventional historical-critical readings of these colourful books

Deception and Abuse at the Fed : Henry B. Gonzalez Battles Alan Greenspan's Bank

By Robert D. Auerbach

The Federal Reserve--the central bank of the United States--is the most powerful peacetime bureaucracy in the federal government. Under the chairmanship of Alan Greenspan (1987-2006), the Fed achieved near mythical status for its part in managing the economy, and Greenspan was lauded as a genius. Few seemed to notice or care that Fed officials operated secretly with almost no public accountability. There was a courageous exception to this lack of oversight, however: Henry B. Gonzalez (D-TX)--chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services (banking) Committee. In Deception and Abuse at the Fed, Robert Auerbach, a former banking committee investigator, recounts major instances of Fed mismanagement and abuse of power that were exposed by Rep. Gonzalez, including: • Blocking Congress and the public from holding powerful Fed officials accountable by falsely declaring--for 17 years--it had no transcripts of its meetings; • Manipulating the stock and bond markets in 1994 under cover of a preemptive strike against inflation; • Allowing $5.5 billion to be sent to Saddam Hussein from a small Atlanta branch of a foreign bank--the result of faulty bank examination practices by the Fed; • Stonewalling Congressional investigations and misleading the Washington Post about the $6,300 found on the Watergate burglars. Auerbach provides documentation of these and other abuses at the Fed, which confirms Rep. Gonzalez's belief that no government agency should be allowed to...
