Sunsets (Foreword by D.A. Carson) : Reflections for Life's Final Journey

Deborah Howard, D. A. Carson
descripción
Because one death touches many lives, it is important for both those who are dying and those who love them to be prepared for the pain and grief that accompany it. Here Deborah Howard shares words of comfort and encouragement for everyone coping with suffering and death. Her compassion, firm faith in Christ, and years of working as a hospice nurse create a uniquely sensitive, experiential, and biblical volume.
Above all, she emphasizes that there is a light that cuts through death's dark shadow. That light is Jesus Christ, and He offers hope and comfort to all who are facing life's final journey.

The feminist gospel : the movement to unite feminism with the church

Mary A. Kassian

Kassian in this book cleary and carefully lays out the history of feminism, with special emphasis on the impact it has had on our culture and churches. This is a must read book for anyone interested in the whole subject of feminist theology. I have seen people angry with this book and with Mary Kassian herself. I have not seen anyone refute her arguments.

Mormonism explained : what Latter-Day Saints teach and practice

Andrew Jackson

A concise, informative introduction to the origins, teaching, and practices of Mormonism today contrasted with historic Christianity. Sociologist Rodney Stark estimates that by 2080, Mormonism will have 267 million adherents. As a leading rival to biblical Christianity in both America and Latin America, it is a religion to be reckoned with. However, Mormons are not so much a group to be feared by Christians, says author Andrew Jackson, as a mission field to be cultivated. As a professor and a pastor in a city that boasts a large LDS community, Jackson has had not only many discussions with Mormon neighbors but with current and ex-members from every level of the church hierarchy. These conversations have led him to study this religion and write this book. His systematic, concise, and well-documented work offers an easy-reading explanation of Mormon teaching and practice today. This book is the first place readers will want to turn for a primer on Mormonism's origins and specific doctrines, and what Mormons believe and why.

Courageous Parenting

Jack Graham, Deb Graham

Sometimes it feels as if the best we can do as a family is to survive. The ups and downs of life leave little energy or hope of doing more than simply gritting our teeth and plugging ahead with life. Anything beyond this seems a long way off. But there is reason to believe that our families can thrive. Healthy, God-centered relationships with your spouse and children can be had only through building on the right foundation. There must be genuine faith, morality, spiritual understanding, discipline, enduring patience, character, kindness, love, and much more. This is a daunting list, one that most of us feel is too great a challenge to attain, but it can be achieved by building our families on the unshakable foundation of Jesus Christ. Often it seems as if building a strong family is nearly impossible. Parents need to be encouraged, though, because creating and growing a family of this kind is possible by the grace of God through the guidance of His holy Word. Throughout the pages of this book, Jack and Deb Graham teach us with biblical models for the home, provide practical advice for parents, and speak from years of their own experience in active ministry and parenting. They offer support and encouragement to parents for the often overwhelming task of raising a family that represents and reflects Jesus Christ, and they put forth a call for courage and godly confidence in forming a biblical legacy for our children and the generations that follow.

Translating Truth (Foreword by J.I. Packer) : The Case for Essentially Literal Bible Translation

C. John Collins, Wayne Grudem, Vern Sheridan Poythress, Leland Ryken, Bruce Winter

Which translation do I choose? In an age when there is a wide choice of English Bible translations, the issues involved in Bible translating are steadily gaining interest. Consumers often wonder what separates one Bible version from another. The contributors to this book argue that there are significant differences between literal translations and the alternatives. The task of those who employ an essentially literal Bible translation philosophy is to produce a translation that remains faithful to the original languages, preserving as much of the original form and meaning as possible while still communicating effectively and clearly in the receptorsвЂTM languages. Translating Truth advocates essentially literal Bible translation and in an attempt to foster an edifying dialogue concerning translation philosophy. It addresses what constitutes ''good'' translation, common myths about word-for-word translations, and the importance of preserving the authenticity of the Bible text. The essays in this book offer clear and enlightening insights into the foundational ideas of essentially literal Bible translation.

The Vanishing Word: The Veneration of Visual Imagery in the Postmodern World (Focal Point Series)

Arthur W. Hunt Iii, Gene Edward, Jr. Veith

There are very few books I have read that have impressed me like this book. The author writes a clear and interesting history of the necessity of the commanded obedience of faith in what God has said (without a "seen" image or experience) versus the lies of the this world requiring a "seen" image. From the beginning in the Garden of Eden to Egypt to the propaganda used by Germany in the World Wars to the present "idols" used by the Church today (and I don't mean statues, I mean shallow music and "performance-driven" services)to where we are being lead to in the last days. This book will humble you and inspire you. This is a book for "everyone" to read! It is well-written and an enjoyable read. It is NOT one of the boring intellectual books that you grow tired because you cannot understand it- it will hold you until the end. I have been so inspired by this book, I have purchased 15 copies over the years to just give to people to read- it is that important for the Christian Church in this present age.

Shakespeare and cognition: Aristotle's legacy and Shakespearean drama: webbing the invisible

Arthur F. Kinney

Shakespeare and Cognition examines the essential relationship between vision, knowledge, and memory in Renaissance models of cognition as seen in Shakespeare's plays. Drawing on both Aristotle's Metaphysics and contemporary cognitive literary theory, Arthur F. Kinney explores five key objects/images in Shakespeare's plays – crowns, bells, rings, graves and ghosts – that are not actually seen (or, in the case of the latter, not meant to be seen), but are central to the imagination of both the playwright and the playgoers.NOTE: Shakespeare Studies should be a distinct category, or Early Modern English Literary Studies. I am constantly flummoxed by the sometimes oddly conflated and generally limited choice of categories. The category structure here obviously grew incrementally with the platform, but it's now, if you'll pardon my saying so, a quixotic a Winchester Mystery House. It needs to be completely revamped and updated -- and hopefully before millions more books are added to the library. I'm not criticizing; folks have done a magnificent job getting here. But "categories" needs work. And protocols for handling compound categories, for example, when a work is not just one thing, but several - e.g., literature, philosophy, religion, cultural history, etc. As a research scholar, retired professor, and former librarian, I believe I could contribute to this imagined project. Likely it is that you all already have such an improvement in the works. Best - John

Deception and Abuse at the Fed : Henry B. Gonzalez Battles Alan Greenspan's Bank

By Robert D. Auerbach

The Federal Reserve--the central bank of the United States--is the most powerful peacetime bureaucracy in the federal government. Under the chairmanship of Alan Greenspan (1987-2006), the Fed achieved near mythical status for its part in managing the economy, and Greenspan was lauded as a genius. Few seemed to notice or care that Fed officials operated secretly with almost no public accountability. There was a courageous exception to this lack of oversight, however: Henry B. Gonzalez (D-TX)--chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services (banking) Committee. In Deception and Abuse at the Fed, Robert Auerbach, a former banking committee investigator, recounts major instances of Fed mismanagement and abuse of power that were exposed by Rep. Gonzalez, including: • Blocking Congress and the public from holding powerful Fed officials accountable by falsely declaring--for 17 years--it had no transcripts of its meetings; • Manipulating the stock and bond markets in 1994 under cover of a preemptive strike against inflation; • Allowing $5.5 billion to be sent to Saddam Hussein from a small Atlanta branch of a foreign bank--the result of faulty bank examination practices by the Fed; • Stonewalling Congressional investigations and misleading the Washington Post about the $6,300 found on the Watergate burglars. Auerbach provides documentation of these and other abuses at the Fed, which confirms Rep. Gonzalez's belief that no government agency should be allowed to...

The Chronicle of Theophanes: Anni mundi 6095-6305 (A.D. 602-813) (The Middle Ages Series)

Theophanes (The Confessor), Harry Turtledove

The most important illuminating source that survived from the two centuries termed ''the dark ages of Byzantium'' is the chronicle of the monk Theophanes (d. 817 or 818). In it Theophanes paints a vivid picture of the Empire's struggle in the seventh and eighth centuries both to withstand foreign invasions and to quell internal religious conflicts. Theophanes's carefully developed chronological scheme was mined extensively by later Byzantine and Western record keepers; his chronicle was used as a source of information as well as a stylistic model. It is the framework upon which all Byzantine chronology for this period must be based.Important topics covered by the Chronicle include: The Empire's struggle to repel explosive Arab expansionism and the Bulgar invasion. The iconoclastic controversy, which caused civil war within Byzantium and led to schism between the churches of Constantinople and Rome. The development of the Byzantine thematic system, the administrative and social structure that would bring the Empire to the height of its power and prosperity. Almost all the sources used by Theophanes have perished, leaving his chronicle as the most important historical literature from this period. Turledove's translation makes available in English this crucial primary text for the study of medieval Byzantine civilization.

Form and Meaning in Word Formation: A Study of Afrikaans Reduplication (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics)

Rudolf P. Botha, Botha Rudolf P., S. R. Anderson

This study of reduplication in Afrikaans provides a unified and principled analysis of an unusual and highly complex word formation process, shedding new light on the scope and content of various fundamental lexicalist principles of word formation. Surprisingly, Rudolf Botha concludes that the principles involved in Afrikaans reduplication are not unique to Afrikaans, as has often been thought, and are used by many other languages. Moreover, the interpretation of Afrikaans reduplications depends on principles of conceptual structure that are restricted neither to Afrikaans nor to the interpretation of reduplications, thus supporting recent work on cognition and meaning undertaken by Ray Jackendoff and other scholars. In analysing the data, Professor Botha has also provided a concrete illustration of how the Galilean style of linguistic inquiry can fruitfully be applied in the study of word formation and meaning. The study thus represents an important theoretical and methodological advance which will be of as much interest for its method of inquiry and argumentation as for the fresh insights it provides for scholars and researchers in the fields of morphology, word formation and semantics.

It is written : Scripture citing Scripture : essays in honour of Barnabas Lindars, SSF

D. A. Carson, Hugh Godfrey Maturin Williamson

This festschrift aims both to survey and advance research on the use of the Hebrew Scriptures within the Bible as a whole. An international team of scholars, chosen for their expertise as well as their association with Barnabas Lindars, cover between them the major divisions of the Old Testament and Intertestamental literature as well as the writings of the New Testament. The work thus makes a contribution to such areas of interest as midrash, apocalyptic, a developing understanding of canon, the nature of prophecy and fulfilment and the literary genres used by biblical writers. It should be of interest to a broad spectrum of students and scholars of theology as well as clergy. - Publisher
