Everywhere we hear talk of decline, of a world that was better once, maybe fifty years ago, maybe centuries ago, but certainly before modernity drew us along its dubious path. While some lament the slide of Western culture into relativism and nihilism and others celebrate the trend as a liberating sort of progress, Charles Taylor calls on us to face the moral and political crises of our time, and to make the most of modernity's challenges. At the heart of the modern malaise, according to most accounts, is the notion of authenticity, of self-fulfillment, which seems to render ineffective the whole tradition of common values and social commitment. Though Taylor recognizes the dangers associated with modernity's drive toward self realization, he is not as quick as others to dismiss it. He calls for a freeze on cultural pessimism. This work examines Pierre d'Ailly's (1351-1420) views on bishops, theologians, and canon lawyers, not primarily in their conciliar context but within the broader dimensions of their individual status, office, and authority within the Church. These views also unfold, in varying degrees, within the apocalyptic context of his thought and result in a call for both pastoral and personal reform, especially for the episcopacy. This call, moreover, reveals strong apostolic and evangelical influences, especially those of the Franciscans and the Brethren of the Common Life, and adds a distinctive dimension to the wide variety of late medieval reform ideologies which, while having some influence at the Council of Constance, contributed heavily to the reform decrees of Trent. Charles Taylor is one of the most important English-language philosophers at work today; he is also unique in the philosophical community in applying his ideas on language and epistemology to social theory and political problems. In this book Taylor brings together some of his best essays, including "Overcoming Epistemology," "The Validity of Transcendental Argument," "Irreducibly Social Goods," and "The Politics of Recognition." As usual, his arguments are trenchant, straddling the length and breadth of contemporary philosophy and public discourse. Charles Taylor has been one of the most original and influential figures in contemporary philosophy: his 'philosophical anthropology' spans an unusually wide range of theoretical interests and draws creatively on both Anglo-American and Continental traditions in philosophy.
