Aristotle and the problem of Metaphysics
Pierre Aubenque"More philosophical perhaps than what Aristotle wanted to accomplish was what he actually did accomplish in spite of himself. With him not doing is still doing, and silence is a word that goes far. The impossibility of intuition becomes the reality of dialectic. The impossibility of immobility becomes the reality of mobility. The impossibility of theology becomes the reality of ontology. With Aristotle the "sought-after science" becomes the science of seeking. The incompleted metaphysics becomes the metaphysics of the incompleteness of the world and of man which calls man to creative word and action. We can have a true estimate of the positive content of Aristotelian metaphysics only if we no longer expect something which is not to be found in it, namely a system. For again the impossibility of the system is the reality of research, the zetesis. Perhaps in this reversing which is at work in the metaphysics of Aristotle we recognize the paradox which arises again and again and which dwells in every philosopher; since he sought and yet did not find what he was seeking, in his very search he finds something he was not looking for."

The Royal Air Force in American skies : the seven British flight schools in the United States during World War II
By early 1941, Great Britain stood alone against the aerial might of Nazi Germany and was sorely in need of pilots. The Lend-Lease Act allowed for the training of British pilots in the United States and the formation of British Flying Training Schools. These unique schools were owned by American operators, staffed with American civilian instructors, supervised by British Royal Air Force officers, utilized aircraft supplied by the US Army Air Corps, and used the RAF training syllabus. Tom Killebrew provides the first comprehensive history of all seven British Flying Training Schools located in Terrell, Texas; Lancaster, California; Miami, Oklahoma; Mesa, Arizona; Clewiston, Florida; Ponca City, Oklahoma; and Sweetwater, Texas. The British students attended classes and mastered the elements of flight day and night. Some students flushed out, while others were killed during training mishaps and are buried in local cemeteries. Those who finished the course became Royal Air Force pilots. These young British students would also forge a strong and long-lasting bond of friendship with the Americans.

Gregory the Great: A Symposium (Notre Dame Studies in Theology) (v. 2)
A group of renowned North American scholars gathered at the University of Notre Dame in 1993 for a symposium on Pope Gregory the Great (550–604). This volume presents essays delivered at the conference, together with additional contributions. In these essays Gregory emerges as a figure both interpreting and interpreted: interpreting the past, receiving, synthesizing, and developing the teachings of earlier writers, and, by this very process, presenting a persuasive theological and pastoral agenda which has inspired projects of interpretation and development in later periods up to and including our own. Review “The Gregory that emerges from these essays is one who, while not speculative or systematic in his thought, responded creatively to the changed circumstances of Christianity in the sixth century, formulating the gospel message in ways his contemporaries found compelling. The essays . . . are a helpful guide to this enigmatic theologian whose influence on western Christian spirituality was―and still is―profound.” ―Pro Ecclesia About the Author John C. Cavadini is Chairman and Associate Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame and is editor of Miracles in Jewish and Christian Antiquity (Notre Dame Press, 2000).
