Famous Problems of Elementary Geometry: The Duplication of the Cube, the Trisection of an Angle, the Quadrature of the Circle. (Cosimo Classics)
Felix Klein, Wooster Woodruff Beman, David Eugene Smith
This short book, first published in 1897, addresses three geometry puzzles that have been passed down from ancient times. Written for high school students, this book aims to show a younger audience why math should matter and to make the problems found in math intriguing. Klein presents for his readers an investigation of the possibility or impossibility of finding solutions for the following problems in light of mathematics available to him: duplication of the cube trisection of an angle quadrature of the circle Mathematicians and students of the history of math will find this an intriguing work. German mathematician FELIX KLEIN (1849-1925), a great teacher and scientific thinker, significantly advanced the field of mathematical physics and made a number of profound discoveries in the field of geometry. His published works include Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Arithmetic, Algebra, Analysis and Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Geometry.DjVulibre:DjVu2TIFF2PDF,loss of text data and larger file sizes.Calibre:produces poorly formatted PDFs and may encounter parsing errorsDjVuToy:1. Descartes's Secret Notebook: A True Tale of Mathematics, Mysticism, and the Quest to Understand the Universe
René Descartes (1596-1650) is one of the towering and central figures in Western philosophy and mathematics. His apothegm "Cogito, ergo sum" marked the birth of the mind-body problem, while his creation of so-called Cartesian coordinates has made our intellectual conquest of physical space possible. But Descartes had a mysterious and mystical side, as well. Almost certainly a member of the occult brotherhood of the Rosicrucians, he kept a secret notebook, now lost, most of which was written in code. After Descartes's death, Gottfried Leibniz, inventor of calculus and by common consent the greatest mathematician in history, moved to Paris in search of this notebook-and eventually found it in the possession of Claude Clerselier, a friend of Descartes's. Liebniz called on Clerselier and was allowed to copy only a couple of pages-which, though written in code, he amazingly deciphered there on the spot. Liebniz's hastily scribbled notes are all we have today of Descartes's notebook. Why did Descartes keep a secret notebook, and what were its contents? The answers to these questions will lead the reader on an exciting, swashbuckling journey, and offer a fascinating look at one of the great figures of Western culture.
The Works of Archimedes (Dover Books on Mathematics)
Archimedes; Sir Thomas Little Heath
The complete works of antiquity's great geometer appear here in a highly accessible English translation by a distinguished scholar. Remarkable for his range of thought and his mastery of treatment, Archimedes addressed such topics as the famous problems of the ratio of the areas of a cylinder and an inscribed sphere; the measurement of a circle; the properties of conoids, spheroids, and spirals; and the quadrature of the parabola. This edition offers an informative introduction with many valuable insights into the ancient mathematician's life and thought as well as the views of his contemporaries. Modern mathematicians, physicists, science historians, and logicians will find this volume a source of timeless fascination. Unabridged reprint of the classic 1897 edition, with supplement of 1912.
A History of Philosophy, Vol. 4: Modern Philosophy, from Descartes to Leibnitz
Conceived originally as a serious presentation of the development of philosophy for Catholic seminary students, Frederick Copleston's nine-volume A History Of Philosophy has journeyed far beyond the modest purpose ofВ В its author to universal acclaimas the best history of philosophy in English. Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit of immense erudition who once tangled with A.J. Ayer in a fabled debate about the existence of God and the possibility of metaphysics, knew that seminary students were fed a woefully inadequate diet of theses and proofs, and that their familiarity with most of history's great thinkers was reduced to simplistic caricatures.В В Copleston set out to redress the wrong by writing a complete history of Western philosophy, one crackling with incident and intellectual excitement - and one that gives full place to each thinker, presenting his thought in a beautifully rounded manner and showing his links to those who came after him.
Descartes - A Biography
Although René Descartes' (1596-1650) is best remembered today for writing "I think, therefore, I am," his unique contribution to the history of ideas was his effort to construct a philosophy that would be sympathetic to the new sciences that emerged in the seventeenth century. In four major publications, he fashioned a philosophical system that accommodated the needs of these new sciences, thereby earning the unrelenting hostility of both Catholic and Calvinist theologians, who relied on the scholastic philosophy that Descartes hoped to replace. His contemporaries claimed that his proofs of God's existence, in the Meditations, were so unsuccessful that he must have been a cryptic atheist, and that his discussion of skepticism served merely to fan the flames of libertinism. Although Descartes died in Stockholm in obscurity, he soon became one of the most famous philosophers of the seventeenth century, a status that he continues to enjoy today. This English-language biography addresses the complete range of Descartes' interests in theology, philosophy, and the sciences, and traces his intellectual development throughout his entire career. Desmond M. Clarke is Professor of Philosophy at University College Cork, Ireland, where he previously served as Dean of Arts and Vice-President. He is author of a number of books on Descartes and the seventeenth century, including Descartes' Philosophy of Science (1982), Occult Powers & Hypotheses (1989) and Descartes' Theory of Mind...
Principles of Philosophy, the
When we further reflect on the various ideas that are in us, it is easy to perceive that there is not much difference among them, when we consider them simply as certain modes of thinking, but that they are widely different, considered in reference to the objects they represent; and that their causes must be so much the more perfect according to the degree of objective perfection contained in them.
Descartes: The World and Other Writings (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)
René Descartes, Stephen Gaukroger, Karl Ameriks, Desmond M. Clarke
Forget what you thought you learned in your freshman survey of Western philosophy about the Descartes whose thought so nicely compliments "the Matrix". Descartes spent a great deal of time in his other major works such as "The Discourse on Method", "The Principles of Philosophy", and even the "Meditations" trying to prepare his audiences for the mechanist theory he had already worked out in this work, which includes "The Treatise on Light "and "The Treatise on Man". My advice to you is to cut to the chase; this work is what Descartes was really about. "The World" was never published during Descartes's lifetime, having been suppressed after the 1633 condemnation of Galileo. In the first section, Descartes presents through the imaginary figure of a "new world" a mechanist explanation of the universe and its intricate system of vorticies, in which he does his best to refute both the seventeenth century atomist and the long-reigning Aristotelian Scholasticism's cosmological theories. Similarly, in the "The Treatise on Man", Descartes describes, through the heuristic of an imaginary automatist machine, the functions of the human body, including comprehensive accounts of sensation, the circulatory system, and the nervous system (what Descartes famously calls "the animal spirits"). The fact is, Descartes' metaphysics largely simplify Medieval accounts and just reiterate what every Jesuit would have been learning in school anyway. His mechanist physics is what was new and...

The Philosophical Writings of Descartes: Volume 2 vol 2
René Descartes, John Cottingham, Robert Stoothoff, Dugald Murdoch
These two volumes provide a completely new translation of the philosophical works of Descartes, based on the best available Latin and French texts. They are intended to replace the only reasonably comprehensive selection of his works in English, by Haldane and Ross, first published in 1911. All the works included in that edition are translated here, together with a number of additional texts crucial for an understanding of Cartesian philosophy, including important material from Descartes' scientific writings. The result should meet the widespread demand for an accurate and authoritative edition of Descartes' philosophical writings in clear and readable modern English.
The Philosophical Writings of Descartes, Volume III: The Correspondence
René Descartes, John Cottingham, Dugald Murdoch, Robert Stoothoff, Anthony Kenny
Volumes I and II provided a completely new translation of the philosophical works of Descartes, based on the best available Latin and French texts. Volume III contains 207 of Descartes' letters, over half of which have previously not been translated into English. It incorporates, in its entirety, Anthony Kenny's celebrated translation of selected philosophical letters, first published in 1970. In conjunction with Volumes I and II it is designed to meet the widespread demand for a comprehensive, authoritative and accurate edition of Descartes' philosophical writings in clear and readable modern English.
The Correspondence between Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia and Rene Descartes (The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe)
Princess Elisabeth Of Bohemia And Rene Descartes; Edited And Translated By Lisa Shapiro
Annotation Between the years 1643 and 1649, Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia (1618-80) and René Descartes (1596-1650) exchanged fifty-eight letters--thirty-two from Descartes and twenty-six from Elisabeth. Their correspondence contains the only known extant philosophical writings by Elisabeth, revealing her mastery of metaphysics, analytic geometry, and moral philosophy, as well as her keen interest in natural philosophy. The letters are essential reading for anyone interested in Descartes's philosophy, in particular his account of the human being as a union of mind and body, as well as his ethics. They also provide a unique insight into the character of their authors and the way ideas develop through intellectual collaboration. Philosophers have long been familiar with Descartes's side of the correspondence. Now Elisabeth's letters--never before available in translation in their entirety--emerge this volume, adding much-needed context and depth both to Descartes's ideas and the legacy of the princess. Lisa Shapiro's annotated edition--which also includes Elisabeth's correspondence with the Quakers William Penn and Robert Barclay--will be heralded by students of philosophy, feminist theorists, and historians of the early modern period.

Discourse on Method and Meditations (Philosophical Classics)
Is it possible to be certain of anything? If so, how? The father of modern philosophy and the founder of rational method in philosophical thought, René Descartes (1596–1650) sought the answers to these questions and in doing so, addressed the most important of methods of thinking and understanding truth. In he applies a scientific approach to philosophy that comprises four principles: to accept only what reason recognizes as "clear and distinct"; to analyze complex ideas by dividing them into smaller elements; to reconstruct the ideas; and to make accurate and complete enumerations of the data. His proceed according to this method, exploring the mind/body distinction, the nature of truth and error, the existence of God, and the essence of material things.
Meditations on First Philosophy: with Selections from the Objections and Replies (Oxford World's Classics)
René Descartes; Translated With An Introduction And Notes By Michael Moriarty
Here is a brilliant new translation of Descartes's Meditations , one of the most influential books in the history of Western philosophy, including the full texts of the Third and Fourth Objections and Replies, and a selection from the other exchanges. Discovering his own existence as a thinking entity in the very exercise of doubt--in the famous formulation cogito, ergo sum --Descartes goes on to develop new conceptions of body and mind, capable of serving as foundations for a new science of nature. Subsequent philosophy has grappled with Descartes's ideas, but his arguments set the agenda for many of the greatest philosophical thinkers, and their fascination endures. This new translation pays particular attention to Descartes's terminology and style, with its elaborate but beautifully lucid syntax, careful balancing, and rhetorical signposting. The wide-ranging introduction places the work in the intellectual context of the time and discusses the nature of the work, its structure, key issues, and its influence on later thinkers. The book also includes notes, an up-to-date bibliography, a chronology, and an index. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to...
The thirteen books of Euclid's Elements, Vol 1 Books 1-2
Euclid, Sir Thomas Little Heath
An accessible, streamlined, and user-friendly approach to calculus Calculus is a beautiful subject that most of us learn from professors, textbooks, or supplementary texts. Each of these resources has strengths but also weaknesses. In Calculus Simplified, Oscar Fernandez combines the strengths and omits the weaknesses, resulting in a "Goldilocks approach" to learning calculus: just the right level of detail, the right depth of insights, and the flexibility to customize your calculus adventure.Fernandez begins by offering an intuitive introduction to the three key ideas in calculus—limits, derivatives, and integrals. The mathematical details of each of these pillars of calculus are then covered in subsequent chapters, which are organized into mini-lessons on topics found in a college-level calculus course. Each mini-lesson focuses first on developing the intuition behind calculus and then on conceptual and computational mastery. Nearly 200 solved examples and more than 300 exercises allow for ample opportunities to practice calculus. And additional resources—including video tutorials and interactive graphs—are available on the book's website. Calculus Simplified also gives you the option of personalizing your calculus journey. For example, you can learn all of calculus with zero knowledge of exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions—these are discussed at the end of each mini-lesson. You can also opt for a more in-depth understanding of topics—chapter...
