Fundamentals of Robotic Mechanical Systems: Theory, Methods, and Algorithms (Mechanical Engineering Series)

Angeles, Jorge

Annotation Modern robotics dates from the late 1960s, when progress in the development of microprocessors made possible the computer control of a multiaxial manipulator. Since then, robotics has evolved to connect with many branches of science and engineering, and to encompass such diverse fields as computer vision, artificial intelligence, and speech recognition. This book deals with robots-such as remote manipulators, multifingered hands, walking machines, flight simulators, and machine tools-that rely on mechanical systems to perform their tasks. It aims to establish the foundations on which the design, control and implementation of the underlying mechanical systems are based. The treatment assumes familiarity with some calculus, linear algebra, and elementary mechanics; however, the elements of rigid-body mechanics and of linear transformations are reviewed in the first chapters, making the presentation self-contained. An extensive set of exercises is included. Topics covered include: kinematics and dynamics of serial manipulators with decoupled architectures; trajectory planning; determination of the angular velocity and angular acceleration of a rigid body from point data; inverse and direct kinematics manipulators; dynamics of general parallel manipulators of the platform type; and the kinematics and dynamics of rolling robots. Since the publication of the previous edition there have been numerous advances in both the applications of robotics (including in...

Robust Statistics, 2nd Edition

Peter J. Huber, Elvezio M. Ronchetti

A new edition of the classic, groundbreaking book on robust statistics Over twenty-five years after the publication of its predecessor, Robust Statistics, Second Edition continues to provide an authoritative and systematic treatment of the topic. This new edition has been thoroughly updated and expanded to reflect the latest advances in the field while also outlining the established theory and applications for building a solid foundation in robust statistics for both the theoretical and the applied statistician. A comprehensive introduction and discussion on the formal mathematical background behind qualitative and quantitative robustness is provided, and subsequent chapters delve into basic types of scale estimates, asymptotic minimax theory, regression, robust covariance, and robust design. In addition to an extended treatment of robust regression, the Second Edition features four new chapters covering: Robust Tests Small Sample Asymptotics Breakdown Point Bayesian Robustness An expanded treatment of robust regression and pseudo-values is also featured, and concepts, rather than mathematical completeness, are stressed in every discussion. Selected numerical algorithms for computing robust estimates and convergence proofs are provided throughout the book, along with quantitative robustness information for a variety of estimates. A General Remarks section appears at the...

Robust Regression and Outlier Detection: Rousseeuw/Robust Regression & Outlier Detection

Peter J. Rousseeuw, Annick M. Leroy

## PREFACE ix Inc., P.O. Box 85625, Seattle WA 98145-1625.) The computation time is substantially higher than that of ordinary LS, but this is compensated by a much more important gain of the statistician's time, because he or she receives the outliers on a "silver platter." And anyway, the computation time is no greater than that of other multivariate techniques that are commonly used, such as cluster analysis or multidimensional scaling. The primary aim of our work is to make robust regression available for everyday statistical practice. The book has been written from an applied perspective, and the technical material is concentrated in a few sections (marked with \*), which may be skipped without loss of understanding. No specific prerequisites are assumed. The material has been organized for use as a textbook and has been tried out as such. Chapter 1 introduces outliers and robustness in regression. Chapter 2 is confined to simple regression for didactic reasons and to make it possible to include robustness considerations in an introductory statistics course not going beyond the simple regression model. Chapter 3 deals with robust multiple regression, Chapter 4 covers the special case of one-dimensional location, and Chapter 5 discusses the algorithms used. Outlier diagnostics are described in Chapter 6, and Chapter 7 is about robustness in related fields such as time series analysis and the estimation of multivariate location and covariance matrices. Chapters 1-3 and...

Rock Fractures and Fluid Flow : Contemporary Understanding and Applications

National Research Council; Division On Earth And Life Studies; Commission On Geosciences, Environment And Resources; Committee On Fracture Characterization And Fluid Flow

Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fractures - a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storage - has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? The committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling and provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fractures--a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storage--has evolved almost entirely in the past 20 years. This volume presents the first comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of...

Second-order Nonlinear Optical Characterization Techniques : An Introduction

Thierry Verbiest, Koen Clays, Vincent Rodriguez

Although chemists, biochemists, biologists, and material scientists are often interested in using nonlinear optical techniques for characterizing their samples, they seldom have the necessary background to exploit these methods. Designed for nonspecialists, **Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Characterization Techniques: __An Introduction__ focuses on the potential of second-order nonlinear optics as a powerful characterization tool. Avoiding extensive mathematical details, this multidisciplinary book does not require a background in advanced mathematics or physics.** After introducing linear optics from the perspective of polarizability and linear susceptibility, the authors cover incoherent second-harmonic generation. They then deal with the study of surfaces and interfaces, exploiting the intrinsic surface sensitivity of second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation. The final chapter discusses second-order imaging techniques, including confocal microscopy and two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy. Accessible to a wide range of scientists, this concise book stresses the reliability of nonlinear optical processes for probing surfaces and interfaces. Drawing on the insight offered in the text, scientists from many disciplines can now clearly understand and use second-order nonlinear optical methods.
