The distinguishing factors are illustrated with shading and in text form, for both US and British variants. Eight pages of attractive colour profiles, plus six pages of colour walkaround photos round out this publication.

At that point, it was the most advanced aircraft flying for the USN and possibly for any navy in the world. However, the fast pace of aircraft development caught up with it, and by the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the TBD was already outdated. It performed well in some early battles, but in the Battle of Midway the Devastators launched against the Japanese fleet were almost totally wiped out. The Douglas SBD Dauntless, the Slow But Deadly Dauntless, was easily the most famous bomber of World War II, and possibly the most important dive bomber flown by any combatant during World War II. The Dauntless was already considered obsolete even before the United States entered the war. Obsolescence not with standing, The Dauntless sunk more enemy shipping during 1942 than all other aircraft combined and destroyed the cream of the Japanese aircraft carrier fleet during the Battle of Midway, a blow from which the Japanese Navy never recovered.

In 1938 the United States Army Air Force issued a circular proposal which called for a twin-engined medium attack bomber. On September 20 1939 a production contract valued at $11,771,000 was awarded to North American for 184 aircraft to be designated as the B-25. The B-25 featured a five man crew. Internal bomb storage was provided in the fuselage beneath the center section for a ton and s half of bombs. The B-25's top speed was 332 mph. The name Mitchell was given to the B-25 honoring the late General Billy Mitchell whom many consider the father of modern military aviation.
