Raise Winning Kids Without a Fight : The Power of Personal Choice

William H. Hughes; Foreword By John T. Walkup

I got this book when my son was about 9 months old. Fast forward 6 months later, the book sat on the shelf largely untouched. Then one day, he started developing mood swings... Since my kid is still a toddler, I am starting with a clean slate. So the book serves more as a preparation for possible things to come. As such, I would've liked to see more examples and scenarios than what's presented. And information presented here isn't all encompassing, covering just the common ground. But there are enough information and strategies to start thinking about the type of parenting I should practice. I can't speak for all, but I often struggle to keep up with toddler's needs and balance work schedules. This book gets to the point, easily worth spending little free time I have these days (i.e., while my son is asleep and I am not doing much behind house chores).

Darkness and the Light, The : A Philosopher Reflects Upon His Fortunate Career and Those Who Made It Possible

Charles Hartshorne

In this book Charles Hartshorne continues his contribution to the field with autobiographical reflections, showing the causal conditions which made his career possible. “There is some advantage in associating philosophical beliefs with specific life situations. The reader will find suggestions for a philosophy of life and of religion. The religion is not the orthodox Protestant Christianity which I grew up in, although it is closely related, but also includes Judaism, Buddhism, and some forms of Hinduism. It will in some ways be found close to the beliefs of C.S. Peirce and also those of A.N. Whitehead. Of the persons, famous or not famous, that I have known, I recall many things that seem worth making available to others, sometimes witty remarks, expressions of outstanding goodness, remarkable wisdom, or ludicrous foolishness. In such ways the book is a celebration of life in its variety, depths, and heights.” — Charles HartshorneCharles Hartshorne is Ashbel Smith Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of Creativity in American Philosophy, Insights and Oversights of Great Thinkers, Omnipotence and Other Theological Mistakes, and Wisdom as Moderation all published by SUNY Press.

Postal Systems in the Pre-Modern Islamic World (Cambridge Studies in Islamic Civilization)

Adam J. Silverstein

Adam Silverstein's book offers a fascinating account of the official methods of communication employed in the Near East from pre-Islamic times through the Mamluk period. Postal systems were set up by rulers in order to maintain control over vast tracts of land. These systems, invented centuries before steam-engines or cars, enabled the swift circulation of different commodities - from letters, people and horses to exotic fruits and ice. As the correspondence transported often included confidential reports from a ruler's provinces, such postal systems doubled as espionage-networks through which news reached the central authorities quickly enough to allow a timely reaction to events. The book sheds light not only on the role of communications technology in Islamic history, but also on how nomadic culture contributed to empire-building in the Near East. This is a long-awaited contribution to the history of pre-modern communications systems in the Near Eastern world.

The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church

The Late F. L. Cross, E. A. Livingstone

It will come as no surprise to those already familiar with earlier editions (1957, 1974) that the third edition of this title remains unrivaled as the authoritative one-volume dictionary of the Christian church, its doctrines and practices, and its most influential historical figures. In addition, the reader will find a host of entries pertaining to the Bible and its world. Because of the rise of theologies of liberation since the publication of the second edition, and because of a growing awareness of the need to heed Christian cultures often regarded as on the fringes of Christendom, many doctrinal articles have undergone revision and many have been added. Prominent Evangelicals have also been included (though, owing to this works decidedly historical thrust, only rarely does the name of a living figure appear).

Cooked : from the streets to the stove, from cocaine to foie gras

Jeff Henderson

Jeff Henderson was just another inner-city black kid born into a world of poverty and limited options, where crime seemed to provide the only way to get out. Raised mostly by his single mother, who struggled just to keep food on the table, Jeff dreamed big. He had to get out and he soon did by turning to what so many in his community did: dealing drugs. But Jeff was no ordinary drug dealer; by twenty-one, he was one of the top cocaine dealers in San Diego, making up to $35,000 a week. Two years later he was indicted on federal drug trafficking charges and sentenced to almost twenty years in prison. Before he knew what had hit him, he was looking at spending most of his life behind bars. The street life had been the only one he'd ever known and even incarcerated he was too hardheaded to realize that no good would come of it. That is, until he was assigned to one of the least desirable prison jobs: washing dishes. That job helped turn his whole life around. It gave him access to the prison kitchen and he became fascinated watching his fellow prisoners cook for the thousands of other inmates and prison officials. Henderson learned to cook in prison. Not cocaine, but food. And his dream was born: Once outside, he would become a chef. It was a tough, seemingly impossible journey for an ex-con. Few chefs would give him the opportunity to cook in their restaurants. And once hired, he endured racism and sabotage in the kitchen. But Henderson refused to accept rejection. Driven by...

Play therapy for preschool children.

Edited By Charles E. Schaefer

"Play Therapy for Preschool Children" is a comprehensive sourcebook of play interventions for preventing and resolving the most common disorders of children aged 3-5 years old. Editor Charles Schaefer has gathered leading clinicians and researchers who present the research background alongside recent advances in the adaptation of play therapy for use with children who exhibit a variety of internalizing, externalizing, and developmental disorders, as well as prevention programs for at-risk children. Chapters use case illustrations to demonstrate interventions for mild to moderate behavior problems, insecurely-attached preschool children and children with posttraumatic issues, as well as how to use play therapy in conjunction with parent psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Contributors also discuss interventions for autistic and developmentally-delayed children, and the use of play interventions in classroom and parent-child settings. Throughout, chapter authors provide practical guidance for the full implementation of clinical ideas, from intake through termination. Clearly written and comprehensive in scope, "Play Therapy for Preschool Children" is a must-have for any student or mental health professional who seeks a full understanding of the latest theory and practice of play therapy with this uniquely vulnerable and often misunderstood population.
