This is a book about Kant's views on causality as understood in their proper historical context. Specifically, Eric Watkins argues that a grasp of Leibnizian and anti-Leibnizian thought in eighteenth-century Germany helps one to see how the critical Kant argued for causal principles that have both metaphysical and epistemological elements. On this reading Kant's model of causality does not consist of events, but rather of substances endowed with causal powers that are exercised according to their natures and circumstances. This innovative conception of Kant's view of causality casts a light on Kant's philosophical beliefs in general, such as his account of temporality, his explanation of the reconciliation of freedom and determinism, and his response to the skeptical arguments of Hume.

Kant (The Routledge Philosophers)

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is arguably the most influential of the Enlightenment Philosophers. In this outstanding introduction, Paul Guyer introduces and assesses all the major aspects of Kant's thought.Beginning with a helpful overview of Kant's life and times, Guyer introduces the "Copernican revolution" Kant brought about in metaphysics and epistemology, carefully introducing his arguments about the nature of experience, space and time in his most influential but difficult work, The Critique of Pure Reason. He gives a much-needed explanation of Kant's famous theory of transcendental idealism, a cornerstone of his philosophy as a whole. He then examines Kant's moral philosophy, clearly explaining Kant's celebrated "categorical imperative" and his theories of duty, freedom of the will, and rights. Finally, he covers Kant's aesthetics, in particular his arguments about the nature of beauty and the sublime and their relation to human freedom and happiness. A concluding chapter considers Kant's legacy and his influence on the shape of contemporary philosophy.Kant is an ideal starting point for anyone coming to the philosopher for the first time, as well as those studying Kant in related disciplines.

Hegel's 'Phenomenology of Spirit': A Critical Guide (Cambridge Critical Guides)

Edited By Dean Moyar And Michael Quante

Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, first published in 1807, is a work with few equals in systematic integrity, philosophical originality and historical influence. This collection of newly-commissioned essays, contributed by leading Hegel scholars, examines all aspects of the work, from its argumentative strategies to its continuing relevance to philosophical debates. The collection combines close analysis with wide-ranging coverage of the text, and also traces connections with debates extending beyond Hegel scholarship, including issues in the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, ethics, and philosophy of religion. In showing clearly that we have not yet exhausted the Phenomenology's insights, it demonstrates the need for contemporary philosophers to engage with Hegel.

Accessing Kant - A Relaxed Introduction to the Critique of Pure Reason

Jay F. Rosenberg

A philosophy-major friend told me he knew of no guides to Kant's _Critique of Pure Reason_. Luckily, I found this, and it's been a godsend. Kant's First Critique is profound and revolutionary, and essential to any history of philosophy. But he's difficult in many ways: he defines existing words in new ways, deals with abstract concepts that are difficult to understand, and his prose is often impenetrably thick. _Accessing Kant_ is very helpful to someone making his or her way through the Critique. It opens with two chapters placing Kant in the philosophical context of his times. Then it proceeds through the Critique section by section, highlighting key passages, and explaining aspects of Kant's writing that are difficult to comprehend on first encountering them. Without dumbing down Kant's thinking at all, Rosenberg presents Kant's arguments in more understandable language, and often provides thought-experiments or examples to guide your way. One minor complaint I have is that some key terms that might be familiar to those with a philosophy background --- e.g., esse, concipi, percipi, just in case x --- are not defined. (They mean, respectively, mode of being, to be conceived, to be perceived, and if-and-only-if x.) And don't expect this to be a Cliffs' Notes. Even when explained in clearer language, Kant is still difficult, and I found myself reading some of Rosenberg's chapters more than once before I really understood the idea that what Kant was trying to...

KANT'S "GROUNDWORK OF THE METAPHYSICS OF MORALS": A COMMENTARY

Jens Timmermann; Kants

I read this book for a graduate seminar on Ethics. In "The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals," Kant astutely observes how ordinary people speak about morality. He argues, ordinary people's views are presupposed about morality, that there is one supreme moral principle it is the "Categorical Imperative" which is discussed in section two of the book. In section one, he talks about value, and special regard or esteem we have for someone who does the right things. Sometimes, people do the right things for wrong reasons. He is interested in what has to be true for an action to have moral worth. He has a kind of criticism of Utilitarians. Utilitarians say you can talk about what is good, i.e., happiness, before talking about what is right or moral. For Kantians "right" comes prior to the question of what is good. One must bring morality in before talking about the good. Talent and ability is good if put to good use, it can also be bad; for example computer hackers creating "viruses." Only one thing is good in and of itself unconditionally, which is a good "will" which means the will of a person who wants to do the right thing. Even if the plan doesn't work out they still have good will. They desire to do the right thing because it is the right thing. Kant argues that action has moral worth only if it is done out of respect for duty. For example, if a shopkeeper is honest in an effort to look good to customers he did the right thing, but only in "conformity with duty."...

Critique of the Power of Judgment (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant)

Immanuel Kant, Paul Guyer, Eric Matthews

The Critique of the Power of Judgment (a more accurate rendition of what has hitherto been translated as the Critique of Judgment) is the third of Kant's great critiques following the Critique of Pure Reason and the Critique of Practical Reason. This translation of Kant's masterpiece follows the principles and high standards of all other volumes in The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant. This volume, first published in 2000, includes: the indispensable first draft of Kant's introduction to the work; an English edition notes to the many differences between the first (1790) and second (1793) editions of the work; and relevant passages in Kant's anthropology lectures where he elaborated on his aesthetic views. All in all this edition offers the serious student of Kant a dramatically richer, more complete and more accurate translation.

Kant's Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Aim (Cambridge Critical Guides)

Amélie Oksenberg Rorty, James Schmidt, Amélie Rorty

Lively current debates about narratives of historical progress, the conditions for international justice, and the implications of globalisation have prompted a renewed interest in Kant's Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Aim. The essays in this volume, written by distinguished contributors, discuss the questions that are at the core of Kant's investigations. Does the study of history convey any philosophical insight? Can it provide political guidance? How are we to understand the destructive and bloody upheavals that constitute so much of human experience? What connections, if any, can be traced between politics, economics, and morality? What is the relation between the rule of law in the nation state and the advancement of a cosmopolitan political order? These questions and others are examined and discussed in a book that will be of interest to philosophers, social and political theorists, and intellectual and cultural historians.

The Cambridge Companion to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason (Cambridge Companions to Philosophy)

Paul Guyer (Editor)

Immanuel Kant's Critique Of Pure Reason, First Published In 1781, Is One Of The Landmarks Of Western Philosophy, A Radical Departure From Everything That Went Before And An Inescapable Influence On All Philosophy Since Its Publication. In This Massive Work, Kant Has Three Aims. First, He Constructs A New Theory Of Knowledge That Delivers Certainty About The Fundamental Principles Of Human Experience At The Cost Of Knowledge Of How Things Are In Themselves. Second, He Delivers A Devastating Critique Of Traditional Speculative Metaphysics On The Basis Of His New Theory Of Knowledge. Third, He Suggests How The Core Beliefs Of The Western Metaphysical Tradition That Cannot Be Justified As Theoretical Knowledge Can, Nevertheless, Be Justified As Objects Of Moral Faith Because They Are The Necessary Conditions Of The Possibility Of Moral Agency. Kant Started This Third Project In The Critique Of Pure Reason But Would Go On To Complete It In Two Other Works, Critique Of Practical Reason And Critique Of The Power Of Judgment. The Cambridge Companion To Kant's Critique Of Pure Reason Is The First Collective Commentary On This Work In English. The Seventeen Chapters Have Been Written By An International Team Of Scholars, Including Some Of The Best-known Figures In The Field As Well As Emerging Younger Talents. Edited By Lara Denis

Immanuel Kant's Metaphysics of Morals (1797), containing the Doctrine of Right and Doctrine of Virtue, is his final major work of practical philosophy. Its focus is not rational beings in general but human beings in particular, and it presupposes and deepens Kant's earlier accounts of morality, freedom, and moral psychology. In this volume of newly-commissioned essays, a distinguished team of contributors explores the Metaphysics of Morals in relation to Kant's earlier works, as well as examining themes which emerge from the text itself. Topics include the relation between right and virtue, property, punishment, and moral feeling. Kant's 'Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals': A Critical Guide (Cambridge Critical Guides)

Editor-Jens Timmermann

In his Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, Immanuel Kant portrays the supreme moral principle as an unconditional imperative that applies to all of us because we freely choose to impose upon ourselves a law of pure practical reason. Morality is revealed to be a matter of autonomy. Today, this approach to ethical theory is as perplexing, controversial and inspiring as it was in 1785, when the Groundwork was first published. The essays in this volume, by international Kant scholars and moral philosophers, discuss Kant's philosophical development and his rejection of earlier moral theories, the role of happiness and inclination in the Groundwork, Kant's moral metaphysics and theory of value, and his attempt to justify the categorical imperative as a principle of freedom. They reflect the approach of several schools of interpretation and illustrate the lively diversity of Kantian ethics today.

Plato's 'Republic': A Critical Guide

Mcpherran, Mark L. (Editor)

Plato's Republic has proven to be of astounding influence and importance. Justly celebrated as Plato's central text, it brings together all of his prior works, unifying them into a comprehensive vision that is at once theological, philosophical, political, and moral. These essays provide a state-of-the-art research picture of the most interesting aspects of the Republic, and address questions that continue to puzzle and provoke, such as: Does Plato succeed in his argument that the life of justice is the most attractive one? Is his tripartite analysis of the soul coherent and plausible? Why does Plato seem to have to force his philosopher-guardians to rule when they know this is something that they ought to do? What is the point of the strange and complicated closing Myth of Er? This volume will be essential to those looking for thoughtful and detailed excursions into the problems posed by Plato's text and ideas.

Immanuel Kant: Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals: A German-English edition (The Cambridge Kant German-English Edition)

Immanuel Kant; German Text From The Second Original Edition (1786) Edited By Jens Timmermann; English Translation By Mary Gregor, Revised By Jens Timmermann

Published in 1785, the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals is one of the most powerful texts in the history of ethical thought. In this book, Immanuel Kant formulates and justifies a supreme principle of morality that issues universal and unconditional moral commands. These commands receive their normative force from the fact that rational agents autonomously impose the moral law upon themselves. As such, they are laws of freedom. This volume contains the first facing-page German-English edition of Kant's Groundwork. It presents a new, authentic edition of the German text and a carefully revised version of Mary Gregor's acclaimed English translation, as well as editorial notes and a full bilingual index. It will be the edition of choice for any student or scholar who is not content with reading this central contribution to modern moral philosophy through the veil of English translation.

Nietzsche's On the Genealogy of Morality: A Critical Guide (Cambridge Critical Guides)

Simon May (Editor)

On the Genealogy of Morality is Nietzsche's most influential, provocative, and challenging work of ethics. In this volume of newly commissioned essays, fourteen leading philosophers offer fresh insights into many of the work's central questions: How did our dominant values originate and what functions do they really serve? What future does the concept of "evil" have - and can it be revalued? What sorts of virtues and ideals does Nietzsche advocate, and are they necessarily incompatible with aspirations to democracy and a free society? What are the nature, role, and scope of genealogy in his critique of morality - and why doesn't his own evaluative standard receive a genealogical critique? Taken together, this superb collection illuminates what a post-Christian and indeed post-moral life might look like, and asks to what extent Nietzsche's Genealogy manages to move beyond morality.
