Plant Secondary Metabolites (Methods in Molecular Biology, 393)
Harinder P. S. Makkar, P. Siddhuraju, Klaus Becker (Auth.)
Plant Secondary Metabolites provides reliable assays that will equip researchers to meet the unprecedented challenge of fulfilling the huge demand for feed driven by increasing demand of animal protein in developing countries. Using more than a decade of experience working with the quantification of plant secondary metabolites, the authors have created a manual allowing for the safe and efficient use of locally available feed resources. This comprehensive new volume also offers readers a better understanding of plant-animal interactions. The methodologies provided in this volume may also be used to determine plant secondary metabolites in human food and in studying the implications of their consumption on human health and welfare. This volume contains methods for analysis of some important plant secondary metabolites, which may be conducted in laboratories equipped with basic facilities. The chemical nature of plant secondary metabolites and their known physiological effects and mechanisms of action are also briefly presented. The methods have been written in a recipe-like format designed for direct practical use in the laboratory. Authoritative and extensive, Plant Secondary Metabolites will become an essential reference for plant biologists, biochemists, and molecular and cell biologists.

Plant Metabolism and Biotechnology
Hiroshi Ashihara, Alan Crozier, Atsushi Komamine, Atsushi Komamine
Various plant metabolites are useful for human life, and the induction and reduction of these metabolites using modern biotechnical technique is of enormous potential important especially in the fields of agriculture and health. Plant Metabolism and Biotechnology describes the biosynthetic pathways of plant metabolites, their function in plants, and some applications for biotechnology. Topics covered include: biosynthesis and metabolism of starch and sugars lipid biosynthesis symbiotic nitrogen fixation sulfur metabolism nucleotide metabolism purine alkaloid metabolism nicotine biosynthesis terpenoid biosynthesis benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis monoterpenoid indole alkaloid biosynthesis flavonoid biosynthesis pigment biosynthesis: anthocyanins, betacyanins and carotenoids metabolomics in biotechnology Plant Metabolism and Biotechnology is an essential guide to this important field for researchers and students of biochemistry, plant biology, metabolic engineering, biotechnology, food science, agriculture, and medicine.

Immunology in Plant Sciences (Molecular Methods of Plant Analysis, 4)
E. W. Weiler (Auth.), Professor Dr. Hans-Ferdinand Linskens, Professor Dr. John F. Jackson (Eds.)
Modem Methods of Plant Analysis When the handbook Modern Methods of Plant Analysis was fIrst introduced in 1954 the considerations were: 1. the dependence of scientifIc progress in biology on the improvement of existing and the introduction of new methods; 2. the difficulty in fInding many new analytical methods in specialized journals which are normally not accessible to experimental plant biologists; 3. the fact that in the methods sections of papers the description of methods is frequently so compact, or even sometimes so incomplete that it is difficult to reproduce experiments. These considerations still stand today. The series was hIghly successful, seven volumes appearing between 1956 and 1964. Since there is still today a demand for the old series, the publisher has decided to resume publication of Modern Methods of Plant Analysis. It is hoped that the New Series will be just as acceptable to those working in plant sciences and related fIelds as the early volumes undoubtedly were. It is difficult to single out the major reasons for success of any publication, but we believe that the methods published in the fIrst series were up-to-date at the time and presented in a way that made description, as applied to plant material, complete in itself with little need to consult other publications. Contributing authors have attempted to follow these guidelines in this New Series of volumes.
Molecular Plant Immunity: Sessa/Molecular Plant Immunity
Molecular Plant Immunity provides an integrated look at both well-established and emerging concepts in plant disease resistance providing the most current information on this important vitally important topic within plant biology. Understanding the molecular basis of the plant immune system has implications on the development of new varieties of sustainable crops, understanding the challenges plant life will face in changing environments, as well as providing a window into immune function that could have translational appeal to human medicine. Molecular Plant Immunity opens with chapters reviewing how the first line of plant immune response is activated followed by chapters looking at the molecular mechanisms that allow fungi, bacteria, and oomycetes to circumvent those defenses. Plant resistance proteins, which provide the second line of plant immune defense, are then covered followed by chapters on the role of hormones in immunity and the mechanisms that modulate specific interaction between plants and viruses. The final chapters look at model plant-pathogen systems to review interaction between plants and fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens. Written by a leading team of international experts, Molecular Plant Immunity will provide a needed resource to diverse research community investigated plant immunity. Animal, Plant, and Microbial Toxins : Volume 2 Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Immunology
During the past two decades, research on animal, plant, and microbial toxins has expanded rapidly, and new and exciting information has appeared to clarify both the clinical and therapeutic aspects of intoxication and, even more impor tant, to help us understand more exactly the structure and the mode of action of toxins on a molecular basis. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of toxin research, it is of vital impor tance that workers specializing in its different aspects should make a particular effort to exchange and keep up with new developments in this rapidly-expanding field. This has been one of the main purposes of the series of international meetings that have been held over the past ten years. The increasing interest in the results of toxin research can be explained partly by the growing general preoccupation with pollution and its toxic effects, which means that more anq more specialists in other fields are finding it necessary to keep in touch with current research into naturally occurring toxins. The papers in these volumes were presented at the Fourth International Symposium on Animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins, organized by the Inter national Society on Toxicology, held in Tokyo in September, 1974. The editors have decided to include both original reports and review articles, arranged according to disciplines. Editing has been kept to the minimum necessary for adequate comprehension of the materials.
Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Immunity
B. A. Rubin And Ye. V. Artsikhovskaya (Auth.)
Biochemistry and Physiology of Plant Immunity details the physiological properties of plant immunity from a biochemical perspective. The book provides a summary and concise explanation of the various studies conducted on the field of biochemistry and physiology of plant immunity. The text first details the evolution of parasitism, and then proceeds to discussing the biochemistry and physiology of heterotrophic micro-organisms. Next, the selection talks about the biochemistry and physiology of diseased plant, before it finally deals with plant immunity. The book will be of great use to research
