Exploration And Contestation In The Study Of World Politics: A Special Issue Of International Organization (international Organization Readers)

Peter J Katzenstein; Robert O Keohane; Stephen D Krasner; NetLibrary, Inc
descripción
Over the last thirty years, international political economy and international relations have become increasingly sophisticated, both empirically and theoretically. Realist, liberal, and constructivist theorists have developed research programs that yield new insights into some of the most perplexing areas of international politics: the interplay between conflict and cooperation, the impact of domestic political structures on foreign policy, the role of institutions, and the influence of worldviews and causal beliefs on decision-making. In exploring these developments, this book also considers them from the perspectives of security studies, organization theory, and economics. This is a republication in book form of a special fiftieth anniversary issue of the journal International Organization.

Sovereignty: Organized Hypocrisy Project Muse Upcc Books

Stephen D. Krasner

Stephen D. Krasner calls into question the nowadays widespread idea that sovereignty is being eroded by different factors (for example, globalization). He points out that, as a matter of fact, the term *sovereignty* has multiple meanings. Ignoring that can be remarkably problematic, because it doesn?t allow us to analyze adequately such an essential concept as sovereignty... The author says that the term sovereignty is used mainly in four ways. International legal sovereignty refers to the practices that have to do with mutual recognition, while Westphalian sovereignty has to do with *political organization based on the exclusion of external actors from authority structures within a given territory*. Domestic sovereignty refers to the *formal organization of political authority within the state* and the ability of rulers to exercise control within it. Lastly, Interdependence sovereignty takes into account the way in which public authorities regulate the flow of people, information, capital and ideas across the borders of the state. The different kinds of sovereignty don?t always go together, and can change at different paces. In this book Krasner concentrates on studying International legal sovereignty and Westphalian sovereignty, seeking to show us how they apply in the international system. According to him, those two kinds of sovereignty are good examples of organized hypocrisy, because they are recognized but not always respected. For instance,...

HUMANITARIAN INTERVENTION: ETHICAL, LEGAL AND POLITICAL DILEMMAS; ED. BY J.L. HOLZGREFE

J. L. Holzgrefe, Robert O. Keohane, Robert O. Keohane

The genocide in Rwanda showed us how terrible the consequences of inaction can be in the face of mass murder. But the conflict in Kosovo raised equally important questions about the consequences of action without international consensus and clear legal authority. On the one hand, is it legitimate for a regional organization to use force without a UN mandate? On the other, is it permissible to let gross and systematic violations of human rights, with grave humanitarian consequences continue unchecked? (United Nations Secretrary-General Kofi Annan). This book is a comprehensive, integrated discussion of `the dilemma' of humanitarian intervention. Written by leading analysts of international politics, ethics, and law, it seeks, among other things, to identify strategies that may, if not resolve, at least reduce the current tension between human rights and state sovereignty. Humanitarian Intervention is an invaluable contribution to the debate on all aspects of this vital global issue. J.L. Holzgrefe is a Visiting Research Scholar in the Department of Political Science, Duke University. He is a former Lecturer in International Relations at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and visiting scholar at the Center of International Studies, Princeton University, the Center for International Affairs, Harvard University, and elsewhere. He was educated at Monash University, Australia and Balliol College, Oxford. He has published on the history of international relations...

European Identity (Contemporary European Politics)

Edited By Jeffrey T. Checkel, Peter J. Katzenstein

Why are hopes fading for a single European identity? Economic integration has advanced faster and further than predicted, yet the European sense of 'who we are' is fragmenting. Exploiting decades of permissive consensus, Europe's elites designed and completed the single market, the euro, the Schengen passport-free zone, and, most recently, crafted an extraordinarily successful policy of enlargement. At the same time, these attempts to de-politicize politics, to create Europe by stealth, have produced a political backlash. This ambitious survey of identity in Europe captures the experiences of the winners and losers, optimists and pessimists, movers and stayers in a Europe where spatial and cultural borders are becoming ever more permeable. A full understanding of Europe's ambivalence, refracted through its multiple identities, lies at the intersection of competing European political projects and social processes.

Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure, 2nd Edition (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)

Mark Irving Lichbach; Alan S Zuckerman; Cambridge University Press

''Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure is a revised second edition of the volume that guided students and scholars through the intellectual demands of comparative politics. Retaining a focus on the field's research schools, it now pays parallel attention to the pragmatics of causal research. Mark Lichbach begins with a review of discovery, explanation and evidence and Alan Zuckerman argues for explanations with social mechanisms. Ira Katznelson, writing on structuralist analyses, Margaret Levi on rational choice theory, and Marc Ross on culturalist analyses, assess developments in the field's research schools. Subsequent chapters explore the relationship among the paradigms and current research: the state, culturalist themes and political economy, the international context of comparative politics, contentious politics, multi-level analyses, nested voters, endogenous institutions, welfare states, and ethnic politics. The volume offers a rigorous and exciting assessment of the past decade of scholarship in comparative politics.''-- Site de l'éditeur

Problematic Sovereignty: Contested Rules and Political Possibilities (International Relations Series)

Professor Stephen D. Krasner

Taking cognizance of the multiple, sometimes contradictory, components of the concept of sovereignty, this volume attempts to answer a fundamental question in international relations: to what extent does the concept of sovereignty inhibit the solution of some of the most pressing issues in the contemporary international order? Some of the most pressing issues in the contemporary international order revolve around a frequently invoked but highly contested concept: sovereignty. To what extent does the concept of sovereignty—as it plays out in institutional arrangements, rules, and principles—inhibit the solution of these issues? Can the rules of sovereignty be bent? Can they be ignored? Do they represent an insurmountable barrier to stable solutions or can alternative arrangements be created? __Problematic Sovereignty__ attempts to answer these and other fundamental questions by taking account of the multiple, sometimes contradictory, components of the concept of sovereignty in cases ranging from the struggle for sovereignty between China and Taiwan to the compromised sovereignty of Bosnia under the Dayton Accord. Countering the common view of sovereignty that treats it as one coherent set of principles, the chapters of __Problematic Sovereignty__ illustrate cases where the disaggregation of sovereignty has enabled political actors to create entities that are semiautonomous, semi-independent, and/or semilegal in order to solve specific problems stemming from competing...

Big businesses, drug barons, insurers, accountants and international bureaucrats all encroach on the so-called sovereignty of the state. Professor Strange examines the implications of this rivalry and points to some new directions for research in international relations, international business and economics.

Bringing Transnational Relations Back In: Non-State Actors, Domestic Structures and International Institutions (Cambridge Studies in International Relations, Series Number 42)

Edited By Thomas Risse-Kappen

Taking a fresh look at the impact of non-state actors on world politics and on the foreign policies of states, this book revives the debate on transnational relations which started in the 1970s. This debate withered away in the face of state-centered approaches, but this book's new approach emphasizes the interaction of states and transnational actors, arguing that domestic structures of the state as well as international institutions mediate the policy influence of transnational actors. Empirical chapters examine the European Economic and Monetary Union, US-Japanese transnational relations, multinational corporations in East Asia, Soviet and Russian security policy, democratization in Eastern Europe, and ivory management in Africa. The book concludes with chapters discussing the theoretical implications of the findings in the empirical studies.

Internationalization and Domestic Politics (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)

Robert O Keohane; Helen V Milner; Peter Lange

Rapid increases in international economic exchanges during the past four decades have made national economies very open to the world economy by historical standards. Much recent economic analysis has been devoted to exploring the effects of such internationalization on macroeconomic policy options, national competitiveness, and rewards to various factors of production. The central proposition of this volume is that we can no longer understand politics within countries without comprehending the nature of the linkages between national economies and the world economy, and changes in such linkages. The authors examine the effect of internationalization on the policy preferences of socio-economic and political agents within countries toward national policies and national policy-making institutions and on the national policies and policy institutions themselves.

The culture of national security : norms and identity in world politics

Peter J Katzenstein; Social Science Research Council (U.s.). Committee On International Peace & Security

Contributors ask whether it is more useful to conceive of the world as arrayed in regional, cultural, institutional complexes or organized along the conventional dimensions of power, alliance, and geography. They argue that perspectives that neglect the roles of culture and identity are no longer adequate to explain the complexities of a world undergoing rapid change.

World Accumulation, 1492-1789

Andre Gunder Frank

This book studies the effects of cyclical fluctuations in the process of capital accumulation - the sixteenth-century expansion, the seventeenth-century depression, the cyclical swings between the Glorious Revolution in England in 1688 and the Peace of Paris in 1763, the Depression and the American, French, and Industrial Revolutions between 1762 and 1789. Frank connects the downswings or crises in accumulation to the changing leadership positions as they shifted from Italy to Spain and Portugal and then to Holland and Britain. He devotes particular attention to the successive incorporation into the single world system of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, whose economies and societies were transformed to contribute to the accumulation of capital in Western Europe and later in North America through exploitation, dependence, and unequal exchange.

Small States In World Markets: Industrial Policy In Europe (cornell Studies In Political Economy)

Peter J. Katzenstein.

By the early 1980s the average American had a lower standard of living than the average Norwegian or Dane. Standards of living in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, and Austria also rivaled those in the United States. How have seven small democracies achieved economic success and what can they teach America? In Small States in World Markets, Peter Katzenstein examines the successes of these economically vulnerable nations of Western Europe, showing that they have managed to stay economically competitive while at the same time preserving their political institutions. Too dependent on world trade to impose protection, and lacking the resources to transform their domestic industries, they have found a third solution. Their rapid and flexible response to market opportunity stems from what Katzenstein calls "democratic corporatism," a mixture of ideological consensus, centralized politics, and complex bargains among politicians, merest groups, and bureaucrats. Democratic corporatism is the solution these nations have developed in response to the economic crises of the 1930s and 1940s, the liberal international economy established after World War II, and the volatile markets of more recent years. Katzenstein maintains that democratic corporatism is an effective way of coping with a rapidly changing world - a more effective way than the United States and several other large industrial countries have yet managed to discover.

Realist Constructivism : Rethinking International Relations Theory

Professor J. Samuel Barkin

"Realism and constructivism, two key contemporary theoretical approaches to the study of international relations, are commonly taught as mutually exclusive ways of understanding the subject. Realist Constructivism explores the common ground between the two, and demonstrates that, rather than being in simple opposition, they have areas of both tension and overlap. There is indeed space to engage in a realist constructivism. But at the same time, there are important distinctions between them, and there remains a need for a constructivism that is not realist, and a realism that is not constructivist. Samuel Barkin argues more broadly for a different way of thinking about theories of international relations, that focuses on the corresponding elements within various approaches rather than on a small set of mutually exclusive paradigms. Realist Constructivism provides an interesting new way for scholars and students to think about international relations theory"--Provided by publisher.

"An Introduction to International Political Economy Susan Strange, formerly University of Warwick. Professor Strange was well known for her unorthodox and stimulating views on the international political economy. Here she provides the student and scholar with a new model synthesising politics and economics by means of a four-faceted structural analysis of the effects of any kind of political authority (including states) on markets, and, conversely, of market forces on states. This refreshingly new framework of analysis is an ideal introductory text."--Bloomsbury Publishing
