Microarray Technology in Practice PDF

Microarray Technology in Practice

Steven Russell; Lisa Ann Meadows; Roslin R. Russell
descripción
Description Using chips composed of thousands of spots, each with the capability of holding DNA molecules corresponding to a given gene, DNA microarray technology has enabled researchers to measure simultaneously gene expression across the genome. As with other large scale genomics approaches, microarray technologies are broadly applicable across disciplines of life and biomedical sciences, but remain daunting to many researchers. This guide is designed to demystify the technology and inform more biologists about this critically important experimental technique. Cohesive overview of the technology and available platforms, followed by detailed discussion of experimental design and analysis of microarray experiments Up-to-date description of normalization methods and current methods for sample amplification and labeling
Deep focus on oligonucleotide design, printing, labeling and hybridization, data acquisition, normalization, and meta-analysis
Additional uses of microarray technology such as ChIP (chromatin immunoprecipitation) with hybridization to DNA arrays, microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and cell and tissue arrays

"Microarray Technology is a volume presenting cutting-edge research on DNA microarray technology. As with other large-scale genomics approaches, microarray technologies are broadly applicable across disciplines of life and biomedical sciences, but remain daunting to many researchers. This comprehensive volume is a guide designed to demystify the technology and inform biologists about this critically important experimental technique. Expert authors highlight the utility of the technology using examples from human health and disease, such as malaria and cancer diagnostics. Microarray Technology in Practice provides the reader with an understanding of the rationale behind each of the analysis techniques and experimental methods used rather than focusing on complex underlying mathematics."--Jacket

The Administration of Sickness : Medicine and Ethics in Nineteenth-Century Algeria

William Gallois

This book is the first comprehensive study of the history of French medicine in nineteenth-century Algeria. It argues that the medicalization of Algerian was a priority for colonial regimes across the century, but that this goal was thwarted by gaps which lay between the imagined capacity of French medicine and its actual efficacy, by institutional rivalries, and by the manner in which medicine became a focus for the resistance of French domination and rule.

Survivors' Songs : From Maldon to the Somme

Jon Stallworthy

World War I was a very literary war, and Jon Stallworthy, an astute reader of war literature generally, is a specialist in the British poetry of that conflict. A poet himself as well as a student of literature, he has published an anthology of war poetry, produced a biography of Wilfred Owen, and is the foremost modern editor of Owen's poetry. Now he has added to that body of critical work. He has published a collection of his essays, revised and assembled for this volume, that appeared earlier as journal articles. Survivors' Songs: From Maldon to the Somme, his latest study, is a well-written and insightful discussion of that genre of literature known as "war poetry." His essays begin with the Old English poem "The Battle of Malden" and move beyond the poetry that followed the Battle of the Somme. Nevertheless, British poetry of World War I forms the centerpiece of this volume, and Stallworthy is an expert on and a subtle reader of it. That I find his essays on Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and David Jones the most telling is due both to the strength of those essays and also to my own admiration of those poets. What's missing, it seems to me, is fuller treatment of the poetry of Isaac Rosenberg and Ivor Gurney, both fine poets and both deserving of fuller discussion. But one can't have everything. He does mention Charles Sorley, one of the early clear-eyed poets of World War I and places him correctly in context. Killed in 1915 at the Battle of...

Polymers, polymer blends, polymer composites, and filled polymers : synthesis, properties, and applications

Abdulakh K. Mikitaev, Mukhamed Kh Ligidov, Gennady E. Zaikov

Polymers are substances containing a large number of structural units joined by the same type of linkage. These substances often form into a chain-like structure. Starch, cellulose, and rubber all possess polymeric properties. Today, the polymer industry has grown to be larger than the aluminium, copper and steel industries combined. Polymers already have a range of applications that far exceeds that of any other class of material available to man. Current applications extend from adhesives, coatings, foams, and packaging materials to textile and industrial fibres, elastomers, and structural plastics. Polymers are also used for most composites, electronic devices, biomedical devices, optical devices, and precursors for many newly developed high-tech ceramics. This book presents leading-edge research in this rapidly-changing and evolving field.

The Ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts (Writings from the Ancient World) (Writings from the Ancient World)

Translated With An Introduction And Notes By James P. Allen; Edited By Peter Der Manuelian

The Pyramid Texts are the oldest body of extant literature from ancient Egypt. First carved on the walls of the burial chambers in the pyramids of kings and queens of the Old Kingdom, they provide the earliest comprehensive view of the way in which the ancient Egyptians understood the structure of the universe, the role of the gods, and the fate of human beings after death. Their importance lies in their antiquity and in their endurance throughout the entire intellectual history of ancient Egypt. This volume contains the complete translation of the Pyramid Texts, including new texts recently discovered and published. It incorporates full restorations and readings indicated by post–Old Kingdom copies of the texts and is the first translation that presents the texts in the order in which they were meant to be read in each of the original sources.

China's Use of Military Force: Beyond the Great Wall and the Long March (Cambridge Modern China Series)

Andrew Scobell, William C. Kirby

In this 2003 study of China's militarism, Andrew Scobell examines the use of military force abroad - as in Korea (1950), Vietnam (1979), and the Taiwan Strait (1995–6) - and domestically, as during the Cultural Revolution of the late 1960s and in the 1989 military crackdown in Tiananmen Square. Debunking the view that China has become increasingly belligerent in recent years because of the growing influence of soldiers, Scobell concludes that China's strategic culture has remained unchanged for decades. Nevertheless, the author uncovers the existence of a 'Cult of Defense' in Chinese strategic culture. The author warns that this 'Cult of Defense' disposes Chinese leaders to rationalize all military deployment as defensive, while changes in the People's Liberation Army's doctrine and capabilities over the past two decades suggest that China's twenty-first century leaders may use military force more readily than their predecessors.

Into the Hands of the Living God (The Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies)

Lyle M. Eslinger

Annotation Into the Hands of the Living God is Lyle Eslinger's second study of Deuteronomistic literature. This book is devoted to studies of key texts (Joshua 1-9; Judges 1-2; 1 Samuel 12; 1 Kings 8; 2 Kings 17) or concepts (the success/failure of the conquest; the exile and theodicy) in these narratives. Eslinger's readings are unorthodox and challenging, both for readers from the communities of faith and for critical scholarship. The Deuteronomistic narratives are here shown to be far from being a vindication of the ways of God at Israel's expense. Rather, in these narratives God, no less than Israel's leaders, has his hands soiled in the machinations that end in Babylon. What the Deuteronomistic history offers is, rather, dispassionate analysis of the problems, some unavoidable, that predetermined the failure of the covenant relationship. The collection of carefully worked out close readings of the biblical text in this volume provides a new critical vantage point from which one can reassess conventional historical-critical readings of these colourful books

Deception and Abuse at the Fed : Henry B. Gonzalez Battles Alan Greenspan's Bank

By Robert D. Auerbach

The Federal Reserve--the central bank of the United States--is the most powerful peacetime bureaucracy in the federal government. Under the chairmanship of Alan Greenspan (1987-2006), the Fed achieved near mythical status for its part in managing the economy, and Greenspan was lauded as a genius. Few seemed to notice or care that Fed officials operated secretly with almost no public accountability. There was a courageous exception to this lack of oversight, however: Henry B. Gonzalez (D-TX)--chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services (banking) Committee. In Deception and Abuse at the Fed, Robert Auerbach, a former banking committee investigator, recounts major instances of Fed mismanagement and abuse of power that were exposed by Rep. Gonzalez, including: • Blocking Congress and the public from holding powerful Fed officials accountable by falsely declaring--for 17 years--it had no transcripts of its meetings; • Manipulating the stock and bond markets in 1994 under cover of a preemptive strike against inflation; • Allowing $5.5 billion to be sent to Saddam Hussein from a small Atlanta branch of a foreign bank--the result of faulty bank examination practices by the Fed; • Stonewalling Congressional investigations and misleading the Washington Post about the $6,300 found on the Watergate burglars. Auerbach provides documentation of these and other abuses at the Fed, which confirms Rep. Gonzalez's belief that no government agency should be allowed to...

Not Everyone Gets A Trophy : How to Manage Generation Y

Bruce Tulgan

This book will frame Generation Y (children born between 1978-1991) for corporate leaders and managers at time when the corporate world is desperate to recruit and retain worked in this age group. It will debunk dozens of myths, including that young employees have no sense of loyalty, won't do grunt work, won't take direction, want to interact only with computers, and are only about money. This book will make a unique contribution in four key ways: It will disprove the idea that the key to recruiting, retaining, and managing this generation is to somehow make the workplace more "fun." To the contrary, Tulgan argues that the key to winning the respect of this generation, and getting the best effort out of them, is to carefully manage their expectations by never downplaying any negative aspect of a job. He will show managers how this Generation thinks transactionally in all negotiations. For them it's about what they will do for you today and what you will do for them today, not tomorrow, not five years from today, but today. He will explain why they have no interest in tying their futures to your corporation. But he will also make clear that they do have a well thought-out plan for themselves, one that requires that every job they take build up their skill sets, so they become more valuable employees for someone else--if and when you do not fulfill your end of the bargain, or drag your feet in doing so. But most of all, it will explain to corporate leaders...

Form and Meaning in Word Formation: A Study of Afrikaans Reduplication (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics)

Rudolf P. Botha, Botha Rudolf P., S. R. Anderson

This study of reduplication in Afrikaans provides a unified and principled analysis of an unusual and highly complex word formation process, shedding new light on the scope and content of various fundamental lexicalist principles of word formation. Surprisingly, Rudolf Botha concludes that the principles involved in Afrikaans reduplication are not unique to Afrikaans, as has often been thought, and are used by many other languages. Moreover, the interpretation of Afrikaans reduplications depends on principles of conceptual structure that are restricted neither to Afrikaans nor to the interpretation of reduplications, thus supporting recent work on cognition and meaning undertaken by Ray Jackendoff and other scholars. In analysing the data, Professor Botha has also provided a concrete illustration of how the Galilean style of linguistic inquiry can fruitfully be applied in the study of word formation and meaning. The study thus represents an important theoretical and methodological advance which will be of as much interest for its method of inquiry and argumentation as for the fresh insights it provides for scholars and researchers in the fields of morphology, word formation and semantics.

Ionospheres: Physics, Plasma Physics, and Chemistry (Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series)

Robert W Schunk; Andrew F Nagy; Alexander J Dessler; John T Houghton; Michael J Rycroft

Ionospheres provides a comprehensive description of the physical, plasma and chemical processes controlling the behavior of ionospheres. The relevant transport equations and related coefficients are derived in detail and their applicability and limitations are described. Relevant wave processes are outlined and important ion chemical processes and reaction rates are presented. The various energy deposition and transfer mechanisms are described in some detail, and a chapter is devoted to the various processes controlling the upper atmosphere and exosphere. The second half of the book presents our current understanding of the structure, chemistry, dynamics and energetics of the terrestrial ionosphere, and other solar system bodies. The final chapter describes ionospheric measurement techniques. The book will form a comprehensive and lasting reference for scientists interested in ionospheres, and it will also prove an ideal textbook for graduate students. It contains extensive student problem sets, and an answer book is available for instructors.
