Adult Bullying : Perpetrators and Victims PDF

Adult Bullying : Perpetrators and Victims

Peter Randall
descripción
The frequency and severity of personal harrassment is a problem that is only just beginning to be uncovered. In Adult Bullying , psychologist Peter Randall uses the voices of both bullies and victims to reveal the misery that many adults endure.
He describes the processes that turn child bullies into adult bullies, often aware of their behaviour but unable to stop it. The workplace and the neighbourhood replace the playground, but the tactics and patterns of reward remain the same. The adult victim has little or no more power than the child counterpart, often changing jobs to escape the attentions of the bully. Similarly, managers like teachers, often fail to tackle the complaints of the victim with the seriousness the problem deserves, preferring to believe that the fuss is unwarranted.
Adult Bullying will be welcomed by managers, counsellors, social workers and anyone who has experienced personal harrassment. Effective ways to deal with bullying in the community and the workplace are discussed, with particular attention given to the implications for managers and employees.

Descripción alternativa
Adult Bullying has been written as the result of community anti-bullying projects in which distressingly large numbers of adults came forward for help, both as victims and as bullies. Peter Randall provides a detailed consideration of the nature and range of bullying, located within instrumental and affective aggression. He describes the learning processes and the family backgrounds that give rise to bullies and victims, both as children and later as adults. The pervasive nature of these patterns shows that personal harassment becomes a way of life, leading to a significant influence within the workplace and the community. Adult Bullying will be a valuable resource for managers, counsellors, social workers and anyone who has experienced bullying, whether as victim or perpetrator.

Serbia in the Shadow of Milosevic: The Legacy of Conflict in the Balkans (International Library of Twentieth Century History)

Janine Natalya Clark

Since the regime of Slobodan Miloševic was spectacularly overthrown on October 5, 2000, little has been written about subsequent political developments in Serbia. The perception of Miloševic as a criminal leader who plunged the former Yugoslavia into bloodshed and used violence to achieve his aims is not widely disputed among Western observers. However, to what extent is this view of Miloševic shared by people in Serbia? Here Janine Clark offers insights into and an understanding of this troubled country. She argues that many Serbs do not regard Miloševic as a criminal leader but rather as a "bad" leader whose greatest crimes were against his own people. This has important implications for how Serbia deals with its past and for reconciliation and peace-building in the former Yugoslavia.

Family and friends in eighteenth-century England : household, kinship, and patronage

Naomi Tadmor; Netlibrary, Inc

This 2001 book concerns the history of the family in eighteenth-century England. Naomi Tadmor provides an interpretation of concepts of household, family and kinship starting from her analysis of contemporary language (in the diaries of Thomas Turner; in conduct treatises by Samuel Richardson and Eliza Haywood; in three novels, Richardson's Pamela and Clarissa and Haywood's The History of Miss Betsy Thoughtless and a variety of other sources). Naomi Tadmor emphasises the importance of the household in constructing notions of the family in the eighteenth century. She uncovers a vibrant language of kinship which recasts our understanding of kinship ties in the period. She also shows how strong ties of 'friendship' formed vital social, economic and political networks among kin and non-kin. Family and Friends in Eighteenth-Century England makes a substantial contribution to eighteenth-century history, and will be of value to all historians and literary scholars of the period.

Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning

National Research Council; Division On Earth And Life Studies; Board On Life Sciences; Policy And Global Affairs; Committee On Science, Engineering, And Public Policy

Human reproductive cloning is an assisted reproductive technology that would be carried out with the goal of creating a newborn genetically identical to another human being. It is currently the subject of much debate around the world, involving a variety of ethical, religious, societal, scientific, and medical issues. "Scientific and Medical Aspects of Human Reproductive Cloning" considers the scientific and medical sides of this issue, plus ethical issues that pertain to human-subjects research. Based on experience with reproductive cloning in animals, the report concludes that human reproductive cloning would be dangerous for the woman, fetus, and newborn, and is likely to fail. The study panel did not address the issue of whether human reproductive cloning, even if it were found to be medically safe, would be - or would not be - acceptable to individuals or society.

In the Land of Invisible Women : A Female Doctor's Journey in the Saudi Kingdom

Ahmed,, Qanta

From Publishers WeeklyThis memoir is a journey into a complex world readers will find fascinating and at times repugnant. After being denied a visa to remain in the U.S., British-born Ahmed, a Muslim woman of Pakistani origin, takes advantage of an opportunity, before 9/11, to practice medicine in Saudi Arabia. She discovers her new environment is defined by schizophrenic contrasts that create an absurd clamorous clash of modern and medieval.... It never became less arresting to behold. Ahmed's introduction to her new environment is shocking. Her first patient is an elderly Bedouin woman. Though naked on the operating table, she still is required by custom to have her face concealed with a veil under which numerous hoses snake their way to hissing machines. Everyday life is laced with bizarre situations created by the rabid puritanical orthodoxy that among other requirements forbids women to wear seat belts because it results in their breasts being more defined, and oppresses Saudi men as much as women by its archaic rules. At times the narrative is burdened with Ahmed's descriptions of the physical characteristics of individuals and the luxurious adornments of their homes but this minor flaw is easily overlooked in exchange for the intimate introduction to a world most readers will never know. Simon the Coldheart: A tale of chivalry and adventure (Historical Romances)

Georgette Heyer, Georgette Heyer

In the early 15th century, during the middle of the Hundred Years' War, England and France were fighting for sovereignty over France. It was a time of hand-to-hand combat, the invention of the longbow, and real knights in armor. Simon Beauvallet was born in 1386, the illegitimate son of Geoffrey of Malvallet. After his mother's death in 1400, he and his half-brother, the legitimate son and heir of his father, became great friends of the Prince, fighting against France. Known for his silence and nicknamed "the Coldheart," Simon nonetheless loved children and had a complex and deep personality. After the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, he was sent to besiege Belremy, where he met the lady, Margaret, who eventually surrendered to the English and became his bride. Rethinking Rights: Historical, Political, and Philosophical Perspectives (Volume 1) (The Eric Voegelin Institute Series in Political Philosophy)

Edited By Bruce P. Frohnen And Kenneth L. Grasso

As reports of genocide, terrorism, and political violence fill today’s newscasts, more attention has been given to issues of human rights—but all too often the sound bites seem overly simplistic. Many Westerners presume that non-Western peoples yearn for democratic rights, while liberal values of toleration give way to xenophobia. This book shows that the identification of rights with contemporary liberal democracy is inaccurate and questions the assumptions of many politicians and scholars that rights are self-evident in all circumstances and will overcome any conflicts of thought or interest. Rethinking Rights offers a radical reconsideration of the origins, nature, and role of rights in public life, interweaving perspectives of leading scholars in history, political science, philosophy, and law to emphasize rights as a natural outgrowth of a social understanding of human nature and dignity. The authors argue that every person comes to consciousness in a historical and cultural milieu that must be taken into account in understanding human rights, and they describe the omnipresence of concrete, practical rights in their historical, political, and philosophical contexts. By rooting our understanding of rights in both history and the order of existence, they show that it is possible to understand rights as essential to our lives as social beings but also open to refinement within communities. An initial group of essays retraces the origins and historical development of...

Environmental Economics, Experimental Methods (routledge Explorations In Environmental Economics)

Cherry/shogren/, Todd L. Cherry, Stephan Kroll, Jason F. Shogren

The experimental method is one commonly applied to issues of environmental economics; this book brings together 63 leading researchers in the area and their latest work exploring the behavioural underpinnings of experimental environmental economics. The essays in this volume will be illuminating for both researchers and practitioners, specifically in relation to questions of environmental policy and how a proposed change in incentives or benefits might affect behaviour and consequently, the likely success of a policy. This book argues that the experimental evidence complements theoretic insights, field date and simulating models to improve our understanding of the underlying assumptions and incentives that drive behavioural responses to policy. Covering topical areas of interest such as tradable permit markets, common property and public goods, regulation and compliance and valuation and preferences, the critical advantage of this volume is that each section concludes with discussion points written by economists who do not use experimental methods.

Barriers to Riches (Walras-Pareto Lectures)

Stephen L. Parente, Edward C. Prescott

Why isn't the whole world as rich as the United States? Conventional views holds that differences in the share of output invested by countries account for this disparity. Not so, say Stephen Parente and Edward Prescott. In Barriers to Riches, Parente and Prescott argue that differences in Total Factor Productivity (TFP) explain this phenomenon. These differences exist because some countries erect barriers to the efficient use of readily available technology. The purpose of these barriers is to protect industry insiders with vested interests in current production processes from outside competition. Were this protection stopped, rapid TFP growth would follow in the poor countries, and the whole world would soon be rich.Barriers to Riches reflects a decade of research by the authors on this question. Like other books on the subject, it makes use of historical examples and industry studies to illuminate potential explanations for income differences. Unlike these other books, however, it uses aggregate data and general equilibrium models to evaluate the plausibility of alternative explanations. The result of this approach is the most complete and coherent treatment of the subject to date.

Power, Prayer and Production: The Jola of Casamance, Senegal (Cambridge Studies in Social and Cultural Anthropology, Series Number 82)

Olga F. Linares

The Jola (Diola) are intensive wet-rice cultivators in the Lower Casamance region of Senegal. In this study, the author examines the reasons behind startling contrasts in the organization of agricultural tasks among three Jola communities located within a 45-kilometre radius from Ziguinchor. In Sambujat, situated in the non-Islamisized region south of the river, wet rice is a monocrop cultivated by both men and women. In Jipalom, in the Kajamutay region north of the river, Islam and cash cropping have been adopted; and in Fatiya, in the so-called 'Mandingized' region of the Kalunay, social relations have become hierarchical and this has had profound effects on the cropping system and on the division of labour. The author examines the shift of power relations over time, and their effects on the way in which production has been organized by age and gender, kin and class. Larger issues dealt with are Islamization, women's labour and the introduction of cash cropping. A concluding section places the history of Jola labour relations within the context of the political economy of Senegal.
