This book is an evolution of Plato’s Moral Theory where Irwin presented for the first time his personal interpretation of Plato’s ethics. The aim of this book is to demonstrate that Plato’s rejection of Socrates’ instrumentalism is one of the key elements in the development of Plato’s philosophical perspective. The book, which is structured in 20 chapters, is a dialogue by dialogue commentary, which discusses Plato’s ethics in context of his metaphysics and epistemology. The first chapters study how in his early dialogues (Laches, Charmides, and Euthydemus) Plato interprets Socrates’ method and doctrines. Then, from chapter 6 to 9, it is illustrated how in later dialogues (Gorgias, Meno, Protagoras) Plato tries to defend and support Socrates’ theories against some possible critics. The core of the book (chapters 10 through 18) is devoted to a careful analysis of how Plato in the Republic develops his own views, moving away from the positions of his master. Lastly, in the two final chapters how the mature views of the Republic are advanced in the late dialogues (the Philebus, the Statesman, and the Laws) is examined.

Plato's Republic : A Study
In this book a distinguished philosopher offers a comprehensive interpretation of PlatoвЂTMs most controversial dialogue. Treating the __Republic__ as a unity and focusing on the dramatic form as the presentation of the argument, Stanley Rosen challenges earlier analyses of the __Republic__ (including the ironic reading of Leo Strauss and his disciples) and argues that the key to understanding the dialogue is to grasp the authorвЂTMs intention in composing it, in particular whether Plato believed that the city constructed in the __Republic__ is possible and desirable.Rosen demonstrates that the fundamental principles underlying the just city are theoretically attractive but that the attempt to enact them in practice leads to conceptual incoherence and political disaster. This book is a selective historical and critical study of moral philosophy in the Socratic tradition, with special attention to Aristotelian naturalism. Bibliotheca Pepysiana: A Descriptive Catalogue of the Library of Samuel Pepys, vol 01, "Sea" Manuscripts
Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) was a student of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and bequeathed his personal library of 3000 volumes to the College on condition that the contents remained intact and unaltered; they remain there, in his original bookcases, to this day. In the early twentieth century, a project to produce a complete catalogue was begun, and four volumes were published between 1914 and 1940. Volume 1 lists 114 manuscripts relating to maritime and naval matters, a subject of particular interest to Pepys, who was employed by the admiralty. They fall into three main categories: official documents of his own time, other official and unofficial documents that he collected as material for his projected 'History of the Navy', and books and papers that appealed to him but are not directly relevant to naval history. This catalogue remains a valuable resource for researchers in naval history.

Volume 2 contains a general introduction to the library and its history, including extracts from Pepys's diary, will, and accounts. It then lists and describes the early printed books, with notes as to special features, other extant copies and publication history, among them several liturgical books in the Sarum rite and 1557 editions of Malory's La morte d'Arthur and the works of Thomas More. It also includes an index of printers. This catalogue remains a valuable resource for researchers in early publishing history and seventeenth-century studies.
