Print and Protestantism in Early Modern England
This is the first study of the full range of Protestant publications from the Reformation to the start of the Evangelical Revival. Based on a sample of over seven hundred best-selling titles of the period, it demonstrates a rapid diversification of the religious works printed and of the readerships at which they were targeted by canny publishers, and also highlights the growing variety of ''Protestantisms'' then on offer.

Microarray Technology in Practice
Steven Russell; Lisa Ann Meadows; Roslin R. Russell
Description Using chips composed of thousands of spots, each with the capability of holding DNA molecules corresponding to a given gene, DNA microarray technology has enabled researchers to measure simultaneously gene expression across the genome. As with other large scale genomics approaches, microarray technologies are broadly applicable across disciplines of life and biomedical sciences, but remain daunting to many researchers. This guide is designed to demystify the technology and inform more biologists about this critically important experimental technique. Cohesive overview of the technology and available platforms, followed by detailed discussion of experimental design and analysis of microarray experiments Up-to-date description of normalization methods and current methods for sample amplification and labeling Deep focus on oligonucleotide design, printing, labeling and hybridization, data acquisition, normalization, and meta-analysis Additional uses of microarray technology such as ChIP (chromatin immunoprecipitation) with hybridization to DNA arrays, microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and cell and tissue arrays
Form and Meaning in Word Formation: A Study of Afrikaans Reduplication (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics)
Rudolf P. Botha, Botha Rudolf P., S. R. Anderson
This study of reduplication in Afrikaans provides a unified and principled analysis of an unusual and highly complex word formation process, shedding new light on the scope and content of various fundamental lexicalist principles of word formation. Surprisingly, Rudolf Botha concludes that the principles involved in Afrikaans reduplication are not unique to Afrikaans, as has often been thought, and are used by many other languages. Moreover, the interpretation of Afrikaans reduplications depends on principles of conceptual structure that are restricted neither to Afrikaans nor to the interpretation of reduplications, thus supporting recent work on cognition and meaning undertaken by Ray Jackendoff and other scholars. In analysing the data, Professor Botha has also provided a concrete illustration of how the Galilean style of linguistic inquiry can fruitfully be applied in the study of word formation and meaning. The study thus represents an important theoretical and methodological advance which will be of as much interest for its method of inquiry and argumentation as for the fresh insights it provides for scholars and researchers in the fields of morphology, word formation and semantics.
Slow Train to Oxmox
Meet the little engine that couldn't - not without everybody's help. Here comes Edwin Blink, rushing to catch the fast train to Oxmox. But there sits the Slow Train to Oxmox, just waiting to catch someone like Edwin! Through the mist and mud, into snarly thickets and flocks of geese, the Slow Train pokes its way. Edwin is furious at the delays, but soon his anger is replaced by fascination as he watches the passengers pitch in to help the train overcome obstacles. Before long, he's rolling up his sleeves to lend a hand, too - and enjoying the stop-and-go ride more than he ever thought possible. In his second book, Kurt Cyrus takes his hybrid watercolor style to new heights in pictures rich with color and humorous detail.
Ionospheres: Physics, Plasma Physics, and Chemistry (Cambridge Atmospheric and Space Science Series)
Robert W Schunk; Andrew F Nagy; Alexander J Dessler; John T Houghton; Michael J Rycroft
Ionospheres provides a comprehensive description of the physical, plasma and chemical processes controlling the behavior of ionospheres. The relevant transport equations and related coefficients are derived in detail and their applicability and limitations are described. Relevant wave processes are outlined and important ion chemical processes and reaction rates are presented. The various energy deposition and transfer mechanisms are described in some detail, and a chapter is devoted to the various processes controlling the upper atmosphere and exosphere. The second half of the book presents our current understanding of the structure, chemistry, dynamics and energetics of the terrestrial ionosphere, and other solar system bodies. The final chapter describes ionospheric measurement techniques. The book will form a comprehensive and lasting reference for scientists interested in ionospheres, and it will also prove an ideal textbook for graduate students. It contains extensive student problem sets, and an answer book is available for instructors.
Economies In Transition: An Oed Evaluation Of World Bank Assistance (independent Evaluation Group Studies)
"The transition economies of the Europe and Central Asia Region faced unprecedented political, economic, and social change after the break-up of the Soviet Union. With assistance from the World Bank and other donors, many countries quickly accomplished a number of reforms, but progress in others has been slower. Much has been achieved - the private share of GDP in the transition countries is nearly 70 percent, and 8 countries have joined the EU - but much remains to be completed. Economies in Transition assesses the effectiveness of Bank assistance to the transition, focusing particularly on five topics: 1) private sector development; 2) governance, public sector management, and institution-building; 3) the financial sector; 4) social protection; and 5) energy. Overall Bank assistance has been successful, but there were mistakes before the true nature of transition was fully understood. The Bank internalized the emerging lessons and shifted its emphasis accordingly. This study highlights the importance of lending at prudent levels until a solid knowledge base is established, with convincing evidence of government and societal ownership of the assistance program. It contends that analysis of governance and poverty monitoring should be early features of the assistance program, active programs of stakeholder inclusion should be widely replicated, and country assistance strategies used to bolster reform capacity."
Beyond Late Development : Taiwan's Upgrading Policies
Alice H. Amsden And Wan-Wen Chu
A study of how latecomers catch up in high-tech industries and modern services, based on an in-depth analysis of Taiwan's premier enterprises and government policies. In this book Alice Amsden and Wan-wen Chu cover new ground by analyzing the phenomenon of high-end catch-up. They study how leading firms from the most advanced latecomer countries like Taiwan have increased their market share in mature high-tech industries and services. The profits that true innovators in these industries once enjoyed have already declined, but profit rates are still above average. The latecomer firm that succeeds in capturing these rents earns "second-mover" advantage. Amsden and Chu examine the successful second movers in electronics and modern services. The critical factors, they show, are the government policies and large-scale firms that drive skills, speed, and scale. R & D in Taiwan was usually undertaken in conjunction with government labs, which prepared the way for local production of the next hot, mature product. Speed in ramping up at the firm level depended on project execution capabilities and access to capital. Scale proved to be an absolute entry requirement in modern service sectors, and was crucial to win subcontracts from leading foreign firms and to secure key components from world-class suppliers in the electronics industry. The authors challenge current orthodoxy along two lines. First, they argue that government played an important role through interventions that went...

The "Jewish chronicle" and Anglo-Jewry, 1841-1991
David Cesarani; Mazal Holocaust Collection
Founded in 1841, The Jewish Chronicle is the oldest continuously published Jewish newspaper in the world. A force for change, a forum for debate and a shaper of Jewish identity, it has played a central part in the development of modern Anglo-Jewry. More than just a mirror of Anglo-Jewish mores, registering waves of immigration and social change, The Jewish Chronicle has been an active player in historical events. Its editors have intervened decisively in communal history and debated with British statesmen. No historian can understand the inner life of British Jews without looking at the social reports, the sports column, the arts and cultural coverage and the advertising that the paper has carried. This book, written by a noted historian of Jewish social affairs, gives an insight into the working of a newspaper, the struggles between editors and directors, and the boardroom politics. It is the story of a publishing adventure that became an institution and helped to shape the destiny of an entire community.

Globalization, Development and the Mass Media (Media Culture & Society series)
This book gives a comprehensive and critical account of the theoretical changes in communication studies from the early theories of development communication through to the contemporary critiques of globalization. It looks at the ways in which the media can be used to effect change and development, and traces the evolution of thinking from attempts to spread 'modernity' by way of using the media through to alternative perspectives based on encouraging participation in development communication. It explores the theory of media imperialism, the criticisms that it provoked, and its replacement as the dominant theory of international communication by globalization.
