Most of the books and other informative material currently available on MS miss the emotional mark. People in the MS community are yearning for material that speaks to them, that tells them the truth about things, and that offers them the opportunity to alternately feel sadness and laugh out loud. MS is their reality and, often, they aren't given the proper tools to befriend it. Accompany Dean through her failures and victories. Experience life through her eyes. Many books convey the struggles of living with a life-changing disability. But Life on Cripple Creek goes further to show that with inner strength and a sense of humor the intrinsic land mines one encounters with this disease need not be devastating. With beauty and joy, laughter and tears Dean brings us Life on Cripple Creek.

EBOOK: ADVANCED QUANTITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS
*What do advanced statistical techniques do? *When is it appropriate to use them? *How are they carried out and reported? There are a variety of statistical techniques used to analyse quantitative data that masters students, advanced undergraduates and researchers in the social sciences are expected to be able to understand and undertake. This book explains these techniques, when it is appropriate to use them, how to carry them out and how to write up the results. Most books which describe these techniques do so at too advanced or technical a level to be readily understood by many students who need to use them. In contrast the following features characterise this book: - concise and accessible introduction to calculating and interpreting advanced statistical techniques - use of a small data set of simple numbers specifically designed to illustrate the nature and manual calculation of the most important statistics in each technique - succinct illustration of writing up the results of these analyses - minimum of mathematical, statistical and technical notation - annotated bibliography and glossary of key concepts Commonly used software is introduced, and instructions are presented for carrying out analyses and interpreting the output using the computer programs of SPSS Release 11 for Windows and a version of LISREL 8.51, which is freely available online. Designed as a textbook for postgraduate and advanced undergraduate courses across the socio-behavioural sciences, this...

Crofton and Douglas's Respiratory Diseases (Two-Volume Set)
Anthony Seaton; Andrew Gordon Leitch; Douglas Seaton; John Crofton
Now in its Fifth Edition, **Crofton and Douglas's Respiratory Diseases** has firmly established itself as the leading clinical textbook on diseases of the chest. Presented, for the first time, as a two-volume set, this classic text has been completely rewritten and greatly expanded. Extensive revisions ensure that these volumes present an up-to-date review of all aspects of lung disease . The contributions of some 18 leading authorities ensure that each area is comprehensively covered and new to this edition are chapters on the genetics of lung disease, smoking, air pollution, sleep apnoea, diving, lung transplantation and medico-legal aspects. The changes in content reflect the pace of change in the areas concerned not only in terms of understanding of the disease processes but also their treatment. The single chapter on asthma that appeared in previous editions, has now been expanded into three chapters covering epidemiology, mechanisms and management, reflecting the enormous research effort currently underway following a marked increase in the incidence of this disease in recent years. This new edition continues to provide an excellent reference both for the trainee and specialist in respiratory medicine, as well as the general physician. It will be extremely useful on the ward and in the office, where clinical problems arise and questions are asked which need clear answers. Content: Chapter 1 Development and Structure (pages 1–25): Anthony SeatonChapter 2 Functions of...
Evidence Based Practice in School Mental Health (Oxford Workshop) (SSWAA Workshop Series)
Though recent legislation embedded with the No Child Left Behind Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act mandates the use of evidence in school-based practice to demonstrate positive outcomes for all students, school social workers - especially those long out of school - often lack the conceptual tools to locate, evaluate, and apply evidence in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of their work. The first of its kind tailored specifically to this audience, this SSAAA Workshop title guides school professionals in infusing research throughout their daily practice. It shows school service providers a pragmatic approach to informing every major practice decision with the appropriate research so that students receive the best possible services. This includes how to use research to make reliable and valid assessments, how to use research to choose the best intervention, and how to do research to evaluate progress. Raines goes beyond creating a catalog of interventions that will soon be outdated and provides school social workers with a detailed road map of the EBP process. Chapters detail the nuts and bolts of EBP, explaining how to ask a relevant, answerable question; where to search for evidence; how to appraise the literature and avoid the pitfalls of web based information; how to adapt and apply the evidence in a developmentally and culturally sensitive way; and how to evaluate the results. Detailed examples along the way, including sample spreadsheets...

Reflections in communication : an interdisciplinary approach
Reflections in Communications is a response and guide to the need for productive and effective communication and is designed for readers who have had little or no formal instruction in the field of speech communication. Dealing with cultural, critical, and contextual issues, the text provides a comprehensive coverage. With an outstanding collection of chapters to develop knowledge and skills, this book uses an array of resources for communicating effectively in democratic societies. An added emphasis is the utilization of interdisciplinary approaches in dealing with principles, concepts, activities, and theories of communication with research evidence. Based on the author's background as a communication generalist, this perceptive volume has broken ground because it applies communication study to a wide variety of situations such as self-concept, perception, listening, interpersonal, interviewing, cultural, small group, speaking to inform and persuade, and addressing freedom and responsibility issues in democratic societies. Transcendentalism : A Reader
The transcendentalist movement is generally recognized to be the first major watershed in American literary and intellectual history. Pioneered by Emerson, Thoreau, Orestes Brownson, Margaret Fuller, and Bronson Alcott (among others), Transcendentalism provided a springboard for the first distinctly American forays into intellectual culture: religion and religious reform, philosophy, literature, ecology, and spiritualism. This new collection, edited by eminent American literature scholar Joel Myerson, is the first anthology of the period to appear in over fifty years. Transcendentalism: A Reader draws together in their entirety the essential writings of the Transcendentalist group during its most active period, 1836-1844. It includes the major publications of the Dial , the writings on democratic and social reform, the early poetry, nature writings, and all of Emerson's major essays, as well as an informative introduction and annotations by Myerson. Library Journal This magnificent edition of the writings of the Transcendentalists introduces a consequential strain of American thinking to new readers. The works have been sensibly selected, and because the original spelling and punctuation have been preserved, the dazzling originality of thinkers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Peabody, and Margaret Fuller rises from the pages with the force and agility of a rousing sermon. Myerson (American literature, Univ. of South Carolina) has edited...

Lockstep And Dance: Images Of Black Men In Popular Culture (margaret Walker Alexander Series In African American Studies)
Lockstep and Dance: Images of Black Men in Popular Culture examines popular culture's reliance on long-standing stereotypes of black men as animalistic, hypersexual, dangerous criminals, whose bodies, dress, actions, attitudes, and language both repel and attract white audiences. Author Linda G. Tucker studies this trope in the images of well-known African American men in four cultural venues: contemporary literature, black-focused films, sports commentary, and rap music. Through rigorous analysis, the book argues that American popular culture's representations of black men preserve racial hierarchies that imprison blacks both intellectually and physically. Of equal importance are the ways in which black men battle against, respond to, and become implicated in the production and circulation of these images. Tucker cites examples ranging from Michael Jordan's underwear commercials and the popular Barbershop movies, to the career of rapper Tupac Shakur and John Edgar Wideman's memoir Brothers and Keepers . Lockstep and Dance tracks the continuity between historical images of African American men, the peculiar constitution of whites' anxieties about black men, and black men's tolerance of and resistance to the reproduction of such images. The legacy of these stereotypes is still apparent in contemporary advertising, film, music, and professional basketball. Lockstep and Dance argues persuasively that these cultural images reinforce the idea of black men as prisoners of...

The Anti-Chomsky Reader
Peter Collier; David Horowitz; Mazal Holocaust Collection
This description is based on the MIT professor's writings on linguistics in the 1950s; but beginning with his criticism of the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Chomsky became much better known for his radical politics than for his theories of language. Over the past forty years, he has gained a devoted following in the United States and Europe for his increasingly bitter--some say hysterical--censure of U.S. "crimes." Chomsky has complained about being ignored by mainstream publications such as the "New York Times," but in fact, his steady stream of polemical works, like the best-selling "9-11," have made him the center of a veritable cult. In "The Anti-Chomsky Reader," editors Peter Collier and David Horowitz have assembled a set of essays that analyze Chomsky's intellectual career and the evolution of his anti-Americanism. The essays in this provocative book focus on subjects such as Chomsky's bizarre involvement with Holocaust revisionism, his apologies for Khmer Rouge tyrant Pol Pot, and his claim that America's policies in Latin America in the 1980s were comparable to Nazism. Scholar Paul Bogdanor writes about Chomsky's hatred of Israel. Ronald Radosh and David Horowitz discuss his gloating reaction to the September 11 attack. Linguists Paul Postal and Robert Levine reevaluate Chomsky's linguistics and find the same qualities there that others see in his politics: "a deep contempt for the truth, descents into incoherence, and verbal abuse of those who disagree with him."...
