The Four-Masted Barque Lawhill (Anatomy of the Ship) PDF

The Four-Masted Barque Lawhill (Anatomy of the Ship)

Kenneth Edwards, Richard Cookson, Roderick Anderson
descripción
"Lawhill" was one of the last of the great four-masted barques to make a living in the 20th century, is closely associated in people's minds with the last grain races and the twilight period of the age of sail. Between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, sailing ships rose to their peak in design; the four-masted barques and the larger five-masted vessels were the ultimate sailing ships, and "Lawhill" was one of the giants. "Lawhill" was launched at Dundee in 1892 for the jute trade from India, but this was soon abandoned as steamships took over. Owners of the big sailing ships had to look for new trades where slow passage was not a disadvantage. For a time she was owned by the Anglo American Oil Company, but she is generally associated with the ownership of Gustaf Erikson of Marieham and the grain races from Australia. These have captured the imagination of writers and readers for they represented the last stand of the steam ship, and were a glorious, though short, final flowering of the sailing ship era. This collection contains a range of contemporary material - photographs, drawings and records. It should be a useful reference book for all those with an interest in the last days of the great sailing ships.

Tudor Warships (2): Elizabeth I’s Navy (New Vanguard)

Angus Konstam, Tony Bryan (Illustrator)

In his second volume on the Tudor Navy, naval expert Angus Konstam covers the extraordinary transformation of the Tudor fleet during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. This period witnessed the birth of a whole new breed of warships designed to dominate the seas and expand the corners of the Empire. Detailing warfare during the age of Sea Dogs, such as Sir Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh, and the landmark event of the Spanish Armada, he explains the technological innovations that allowed this small but efficient navy to defeat the larger Spanish fleet. Packed with new research, in-depth analysis, photographs, full-color reconstructions and detailed cutaway artwork, this book is a must for any lover of maritime history and for anyone who wants to understand how Britain came to rule the waves, creating and retaining her supremacy across the seas throughout the age of fighting sail.

The Bomb Vessel "Granado": 1742 (Conway's Anatomy of the Ship)

Anatomy of the Ship: HMS Beagle Survey Ship Extraordinary

Karl Heinz Marquardt

HMS Beagle was a Cherokee-class 10-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, one of more than 100 ships of this class. The vessel, constructed at a cost of £7,803, was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames. In July of that year she took part in a fleet review celebrating the coronation of King George IV of the United Kingdom, and for that occasion is said to have been the first ship to sail completely under the old London Bridge. There was no immediate need for Beagle so she «lay in ordinary», moored afloat but without masts or rigging. She was then adapted as a survey barque and took part in three expeditions. On the second survey voyage the young naturalist Charles Darwin was on board, and his work made Beagle one of the most famous ships in history.

Anatomy of the Ship: The Battlecruiser Hood

John Arthur Roberts

There was a time when the Battlecruiser Hood was the largest, fastest and most handsome capital ship in the world. She was also adored by the British public and in many ways came to symbolise everything that was supremely good about the Royal Navy. On 24 May 1941 the Hood was famously sunk by the Bismarck with only three of her crew of 1,419 surviving. It was an act which resulted in Churchill giving the order "Sink the Bismarck" and, of course, they did. More recently, the remains of HMS Hood have been located at great depth in the North Atlantic resulting in renewed interest in the ship itself. Elsewhere, there are websites dedicated to the vessel and a very strong HMS Hood Association attended by those who had previously served on this, the most beautiful of ships. This is an excellent book for all such interested people. Conway Maritime Press are well known for their "Anatomy of the Ship" series in which they provide the finest technical documentation for specific ships or ship types ever published. "The Battlecruiser Hood" is hard-back measuring 101⁄4" (wide) x 93⁄4" with 127 pages of detailed and factual information. This wide format allows the publishers to produce first class detailed line drawings of every aspect of this ship in a size that is easy to see and follow. All the information is there - right down to the last nut and bolt. Laid down in 1916, Hood was designed and constructed when ships got close to the enemy and fired straight at them. By the...

The Destroyer Campbeltown

Al Ross

The destroyer Campbeltown is most famous for her part in the commando raid on the St Nazaire drydock in 1942. Built as the USS Buchanan (DD131)- and later renamed Campbelton - she was one of over 270 flush-decked destroyers put into service towards the end of World War I. When Britain appealed to America in 1940 for the transfer of fifty vessels for anti-submarine duty, Buchanan was one of the first gift horses to be transferred. The Anatomy of the Ship Series : This highly acclaimed series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory perspective views. This is the first attempt to document a ship literally down to the nuts and bolts. These drawings are accurate, visually exciting and totally comprehensive, offering ship buffs, historians and modelmakers a novel insight into the technicalities of each ship type covered.

The Ships of Christopher Columbus: Santa Maria, Nina and Pinta (Anatomy of the Ship)

Xavier Pastor

1992 marked the 500th anniversary of the European discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus. The details of Columbus's ships - the Santa Maria, Nina and Pinta - remain lost to historians, for the ships were built before the first manuals of shipbuilding were written, and no documentation or illustration has survived. Nevertheless, extensive research has allowed the construction of a number of replicas over the years, and those built in Spain in 1892 and 1927 are regarded as among the most realistic. The new replicas built for the 1992 celebrations are without doubt the most accurate reconstructions yet. Many years of research by Jose Martinez-Hidalgo and his successors into the naos and caravels of the 15th and 16th centuries has allowed a whole new insight into the design and construction of the famous ships of Columbus.

At the café : conversations on anarchism by Errico Malatesta

By Errico Malatesta; Edited With An Introduction By Paul Nursey-Bray; Translated By Paul Nursey-Bray With The Assistance Of Piero Ammirato

While Malatesta was hiding from the police he regularly went to a cafe in Ancona, Italy. He had shaved off his usual beard but he was still taking a risk. Especially as this wasn't an anarchist cafe, but had a variety of customers including the local policeman. The conversations he had in this caf? became the basis for the dialogues that make up this book. For the first time in English, Malatesta, in his usual commonsense and matter-of-fact style, sets out and critically analyses the arguments for and against anarchism. Translated by Paul Nursey-Bray, this is a classic defence of anarchism that anticipates the rise of nationalism, fascism and communism.

The royal saints of Anglo-Saxon England : a study of some West Saxon and East Anglian cults

Susan Janet Ridyard

Within Anglo-Saxon England there was a strong and enduring tradition of royal sanctity - of men and women of royal birth who, in an age before the development of papal canonisation, came to be venerated as saints by the regional church. This study, which focuses on some of the best-documented cults of the ancient kingdoms of Wessex and East Anglia, is a contribution towards understanding the growth and continuing importance of England's royal cults. The author examines contemporary and near-contemporary theoretical interpretations of the relationship between royal birth and sanctity, analyses in depth the historical process of cult-creation, and addresses the problem of continuity of cult in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest of 1066. An understanding therefore emerges of the place of the English royal saint not only in Anglo-Saxon society but also in that of the Anglo-Norman realm.

The 44-Gun Frigate USS Constitution, ''Old Ironsides'' (Anatomy of the Ship)

Karl Heinz Marquardt

The Constitution was one of the first frigates built by the fledgling U.S. Navy, ordered in 1794 as a counter to the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean. Heavily built but fast, she was rated as a 44-gun ship but mounted thirty 24-pounder cannons. Her most famous encounter came in 1812 when she successfully fought against the HMS Guerriere , earning the nickname "Old Ironsides" when the British round shot could not penetrate her walls. Built in Boston where she has been berthed for over seventy years, she is considered to be the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. The internationally-acclaimed draftsman and author Karl-Heinz Marquardt worked closely with the team at the Constitution to ensure that the book is accurate and up-to-date. Dozens of photographs and some 100 perspective and 3-view drawings are included along with fully descriptive keys and a large-scale foldout plan on the reverse side of the jacket.
